I had a hip replacement under Mr Jacob in May 2023. Prior to the operation, last year I could barely do 2 miles. I joined Nuffield to do exercies. I was getting frustrated with my hip. After the hip replacement, I can walk properly up and down the stairs and yesterday I walked a mile easily. I was discharged within 24hours of my operation, although I felt I could have left the same day! Another positive news I was pre-poned in my operation which I am very delighted about. Lynda Clarke

I had a total hip replacement ( right hip ) under the care of Mr Joshua Jacob on the 16th March 2023. This was through the NHS ( not private ) Initially I was due to have my op done by another surgeon, but a few weeks before the op was told that I was now under the care of Mr Joshua Jacob. I had therefore previously been seen by someone else and only met Mr Jacob briefly on the day of the surgery. Of course I would have preferred to have seen Mr Jacob previously, but was reassured by Mr Jacob on the morning of the surgery that all would be well. He also answered the few questions I had at this time. Also I was quite happy that Mr Jacob was doing my op as I had heard very positive things about him. I walked to the theatre at about 4pm. I was shown into the anaesthesia section. I must say that the room was very cold, but I was well looked after and the anaesthetist and those assisting him were excellent and very reassuring. The spinal anaesthetic was no problem at all. Next I was taken into the operating theatre, placed on my side and after that I was unaware of anything else . Mr Jacob saw me briefly before I was taken to recovery together with the surgeon that had actually performed the op, under Mr Jacob’s supervision. Mr. Jacob told me that the op had gone well. I eventually made it back to Dickens Ward at about 7:15pm. During the spinal anaesthetic I had a catheter inserted ( something which I unfortunately always find very uncomfortable ) but which is necessary as the spinal anaesthetic lasts quite a long time and I was only able to regain feeling in my legs at about 11pm that evening. The next morning after breakfast I was seen by the physio who got me out of bed , showed me some exercises and put me through my paces. I was able to perform all the exercises without any problem could walk perfectly well with the use of my crutches and go up and down stairs without any problem. The physio’s opinion was that I could have gone home as far as he was concerned. ( This was Friday morning ) Unfortunately, I was kept in hospital until Saturday afternoon. The catheter was only removed sometime on Saturday. I wish that it could have been taken out a lot sooner. I have had seed brachytherapy to treat prostate cancer and I find that having a catheter inserted affects my ability to control my urine flow. The longer it is in the worse it gets and I find it embarrassing. Anyway after about a week at home this condition settled down. I really felt pretty good once at home and really felt that I didn’t need the help of the crutches, but wasn’t sure that I should discard them as I can’t remember being given definite advice in this regard. Unfortunately however at about 2 weeks post op I had a very bad slip while getting up from a chair This accident seemed to set me back a lot and I think that I must have done some damage to my muscles. This caused quite a lot of swelling and bad pain behind my knee. I had a follow up appointment with Mr Jacobs on the 26th April and he assured me that all would be well. Since then the swelling and pain behind the knee has subsided and I now feel that I am now back to where I was at 2 weeks post op. I’d like to take this opportunity to mention how great all the staff were in Dickens Ward Ashford as well as the physio and anaesthetist. Also thanks to Mr Jacob and the surgeon who was under his supervision.

Mr Jacobs was willing to operate on my 80yr old mother. She had a full hip replacement 2022 and broke/fractured the bone round the hip replacement March 2023. Part of the procedure that Mr Jacobs delivered was the first in England. Mum has recovered well and is up and walking about. Having been signed off by Mr Jacobs at her 6wk check up appointment. Mum has been very happy with Mr Jacobs care and very thankful for the operation that has given her her independence back.

I had a total hip replacement on the Fast Track day case, initially this seemed daunting but the efficiency of the whole process was impressive. I was in pain when walking, getting up from sitting and sleeping, 9 weeks later I have made good progress and can walk 2-3 miles without crutches and pain. The communication from Mr Jacobs and the Orthopaedic Team was reassuring and helpful.
