Written by a carer at Ashford Hospital
15th February 2017

Dr. Joshi is the Consultant at Ashford Hospital in Middlesex who diagnosed my elderly Uncle with a hole in the retina in his left eye, carried out the surgery and then treated him for post operative care in 2016/2017. I accompanied my uncle during his consultations and visits to the hospital so am able to comment first hand on the experience and level of care/attention my Uncle received. Understandably my Uncle was a little hesitant and anxious about any sort of operation to his eye but more so as this one involved gas being put in the eye and then the stringent post operative procedures that he would have to follow to ensure the gas escaped. However, having had the initial consultations and checks at Ashford Hospital he was advised that there was no real alternative to surgery other than face up to deteriorating vision in his left eye. Dr Joshi is a very competent and personable professional with a very empathetic and reassuring style. He was able to fully explain in an articulate and layman style the results of the pre-tests and the options available to treat the hole in the retina. In particular the possible (albeit minimal) risks and the importance of ensuring that for 3-5 days after the operation he would need to ensure that he kept his head facing downwards to allow the “gas bubble” to escape naturally. To support the consultations and learning process he also made available some very useful documents on the background to the macular hole condition and what to expect during and post the operation. From the initial diagnosis in September 2016, ninety minute operation under local anaesthetic in early December and subsequent check ups I am happy to say that my Uncle has fully recovered and vision in the left eye has improved considerably. He is now fully recovered and will be able to travel as planned for a family visit abroad. My Uncle and his family are very grateful to Dr Joshi and the suport staff at Ashford hospital for ensuring that his eye condition has been corrected succesfully. Dr Joshi in particular with his empathetic style and competency in this area of Opthalmology has ensured that what was understandably a stressful time has been dealt with without any undue stress and worry. For that we offer our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Dr Joshi and all the support staff at Ashford for the care and professional way they provided it.

I recently had an eye operation and was very impressed with the quality of care I received from Mr. Lavnish Joshi. The level of detail he gave me during consultations was wonderful. He clearly explained the procedure and what the recovery would entail. His post-operation care was excellent and I have recovered much quicker than expected.

I was operated on by Mr Joshi this time last year almost to the day. He then asked me, at my last check-up in May 2016, to complete this form. Unfortunately, I misplaced the piece of paper, I am embarrassed to say. The operation Mr Joshi did on me came as a shock as it was a week before Christmas plus I had just recovered from a previous retina operation and was very upset. However, Mr Joshi superb manner really helped me emotionally. Previously I had been given a "gas bubble" by a different surgeon, which took 7 weeks to recover from, and for it to completely dissipate, which made my life difficult and limited. Mr Joshi wanted to use a different operation on me, second time round - apparently he was the expert on this operation, having studied it in the USA. I still had a gas bubble after the second operation however it immediately started to dissipate and it gathered momentum and all of it disappeared in about 5 days which was a huge relief to me with Christmas just a few days away. I was able to operate normally for Christmas!!!!! I am eternally grateful to Mr Joshi for saving my sight!!! Moreover, he has personality, and smells delightful - great aftershave!! Overall, I am eternally grateful to everyone at Bristol Eye Hospital for being so amazing to me. Janice, my first Nurse when I was rushed in on a Saturday morning completely shell-shocked on 5 September 2015 really looked after me. My chirpy male nurse who did a marvellous job of distracting me at crucial times pre-surgery. Ironically, my visits to Bristol Eye Hospital hold fond memories for me!!! And I am proud to say the Surgeons there are my personal Surgeons! Also the male Receptionist downstairs is so helpful.

Mr Lavinish Joshi, is a very competent surgeon, I had a vitrectomy and lens insertion in my left eye he answered all my questions with consideration and care. I was apprehensive but he reassured me through out the operation and again when I went back for my check up. I found him to be a very good surgeon and a very understanding young man. Thank you I now have good sight in my eye.
