Mr Cudlip spoke to me after I had been newly diagnosed with a clinoidal meningioma. He was patient and explained what to expect and even though he did not actually treat me in the end, his knowledge was reassuring and I appreciated the time he spent talking to me. Post operation, I met him in hospital and he was considerate and thoughtful while we spoke.

Mr Cudlip is a very empathetic Dr who listens and responds in a genuinely caring way, which when you are in acute pain is very much needed. I trusted his knowledge and expertise in the care he suggested and I felt that he did everything he could at the time to help me. However I did feel somewhat let down by the lack of follow up, I was told I would be booked in for surgery upon Mr Cudlip's return from holiday as a back up plan in case I didn't get better while he was away. This didn't happen and it was only because I chased his secretary a couple of weeks after he was due to return because I hadn't heard anything that I got any kind of follow up care. Fortunately I didn't need surgery and my pain had significantly subsided but it did significantly delay me seeing Mr Cudlip again because the follow up appointments were not made after the initial consultation.

I'm sorry about the delay in getting you an appointment, a combination of staff sickness, cover from other admin staff etc led to some delays for which I apologise. I've made the management of the centre I work in aware, and they have listened and fixed it. Making me aware of these type of problems is really useful, as I would feel exactly the same way

Following my initial consultation with Dr Cudlip, my first impression was very good; he is an extremely polite and calm person, full of empathy and a perfect listener. The service was fantastic, we went through a deep discussion about my neck pain, symptoms and lifestyle. He explained to me the MRI images clearly and then suggested to perform NCS and EMG tests with recommended neurophysiologist (another great experience during the exam and that doctor was also a fantastic professional). Looking forward to the next appointment to go through the results and discuss the next steps of my treatment.

Simon was recommended to me, thankfully, and I was so glad to meet him. Simon is the ultimate professional. I had sadly previously been seen by someone else and was extremely concerned and Simon put me at ease immediately. Simon clearly articulated to me my condition. He showed me my MRI and we discussed my condition and took allayed all my fears. He immediately booked another MRI as the old one was out of date and following that called me back and discussed again and booked a treatment plan. Simon has empathy, emotion and totally understand your concerns and does his best to listen to you whilst helping you understand the medical side of things too so you don't get lost in fear. Simon then booked me on to see his colleague who was also extremely helpful and I have been very lucky to be looked after by the best. I know that my condition is long term and potential I will cross paths with Simon in the future and it will be a pleasure to see Simon again as I would not wish anyone else to look after me when the time comes, as sadly it will do. I cannot recommend Simon highly enough. He is absolutely fantastic and one of the best doctors I have ever met.

After care follow up has not been easy. Almost impossible to get chance to speak to Dr Cudlip after the operation. I have been refered to the neurosurgery team to handle any queries and have not been able to speak to any doctor in the team for several weeks. Considering this was such a significant operation, I would expect a much better and efficient follow up service. And to speak to Mr Cudlip at least once should be normal. Not impressed with follow up service.

Response from Mr Simon Cudlip

I’m really sorry to hear this, I always do my best respond to queries and concerns very quickly, if I’m away one of my team does this on my behalf. My secretary at the JR is very efficient and I wonder if messages are somehow not getting through. This link will take you to my secretary’s contact details- please get in touch and we’ll sort this out. https://www.ouh.nhs.uk/services/departments/neurosciences/neurosurgery.aspx

Profile

Simon Cudlip is currently Lead Clinician for Neurosurgery at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust.

He graduated from King’s College School of Medicine, London in 1990. During this period he also gained a BSc first class (Hons) in immunology. Following a period of training in general surgery in London he entered the neurosurgery training programme in London based at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, and the Atkinson Morley Hospital, London. During this period of training he completed his MD thesis in MRI imaging of peripheral nerve and published numerous papers on this topic and on MRI spectroscopy of brain tumours.

On completion of his general neurosurgical training in 2003, he spent a year as a fellow at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square as the Pituitary Fellow to Mr Michael Powell. In addition to this he visited Naples and Bologna to gain experience in endoscopic pituitary surgery, and Seattle as a visiting fellow.

In 2004 he was appointed as Consultant in Neurosurgery with a specialist interest in pituitary and skull-base surgery in Oxford, and Honorary Senior Lecturer in Neurosurgery at the University of Oxford. Since this time he has performed nearly 2000 transsphenoidal operations for pituitary disease, these have been performed using a pure endoscopic technique since 2007. As a result of this Oxford has the best established nationally recognised pituitary surgical training fellowship in the UK. These endoscopic techniques have now been developed further with his colleague Puneet Plaha, and extended into surgery for intrinsic brain tumours. He has published numerous papers, book chapters and reviews on the topic of pituitary surgery, and is a tutor at the College of Surgeons of England and numerous international courses, teaching endoscopic surgical techniques.

He also has an interest in minimally invasive brain surgery for tumours, and minimally invasive spine surgery. He also runs a course on cervical disc replacement surgery in Amsterdam and the UK.

More recently he has travelled to Uzbekistan and India, operating and lecturing on pituitary surgery.
