I initially met Ben Hornung to discuss colostomy reversal surgery. I was very anxious. Ben listened to me, reassured me and explained everything to me in a way I could understand. On the day of the surgery he came to see me, reassure me again and explain the surgery to me again. After surgery he came to see me again that same evening and by the time I woke the next morning he was back at my bedside to see how I was. I am so happy I chose to have my surgery with Ben Hornung. The experience was better than I could hope for. I recommend Ben especially if you have alot of anxiety like I did. The actual surgery was a success and the scar was so neat and smaller than I could have hoped for. All in all it could not have gone any better.

Informative and thorough first consultation and advice from Me Hornung with an excellent administration colleague supporting the process. The subsequent In-patient experience was first class - a great theatre team, very reassuring in their approach. Mr Hornung explained in easy to understand terms exactly what the procedure would entail and what to expect, followed by a comprehensive post procedure review.

I had a consultation with Ben in January and an operation on 1st Feb.at the Alexandra in Cheadle. I was admitted as a day patient. I had a general anaesthetic for an operation that lasted about an hour. The operation went well and I was very impressed by the way Ben explained everything to me.He has a charming bedside manner and I felt really cared for by him and all the staff in the operating theatre. In addition all the staff that I came into contact with were most helpful and caring. The staff on the Lancaster suite could not do enough for me with constant check ups and a cheery manner. Thank you to all at the Alex.

16th December 2020

I first came into contact with Ben Hornung earlier in 2020 as a referral linked to another health issue that required an initial telephone consultation with a colorectal surgeon. It was agreed that the other issue was more pressing and with the reassurance I needed from Ben that there was no immediate intervention needed and I would be followed up later in 2020. Ben made contact as promised on the 26th October and we agreed that a sensible approach was to have Ben and the team take a look to check out what I thought was a minor issue. A date was quickly arranged for the 11th November and I was admitted as a day case expecting a quick turnaround and to be discharged with a clean bill of health. This was not the case an unfortunately the procedure identified a tumor in my colorectal region. I was devastated at that time but Ben provided all the reassurance needed at what was a shocking and scary time. Ben immediately arranged a CT scan on the same day with further tests and scans to be arranged. I left for home in a state of shock to break the news to my family and not really knowing what to expect in the coming weeks. From this point forward Ben and the team put the wheels in motion and boy did they get this sorted. During the next few days and weeks I was to have a MRI scan, a virtual Colonoscopy CT, discussions with nurses, and others that would be involved with my care. Ben was in regular contact during this period and on the phone providing regular updates on the results of the scans, biopsies etc. Ben also updated me on the discussions taking place regarding my possible care and how this would work factoring in my current health situation that would need careful management prior to surgery. At every stage Ben would provide a reassuring ear calling when promised and providing what I can only say was the clearest and most honest view of what was happening. It was great getting these updates as this not only reassured my but also all my family and friends. A provisional date of admission was given to me but before Ben had even rung me to confirm the date his team at the Spire in Manchester had been in touch. When Ben did ring he stated they were all working hard to get me admitted ASAP and to get the op done and dusted and get me home and recovered by Christmas. A further call from Ben had confirmed that according to the MRI and CT scans the tumor had not spread so this was really great news. The MDT meeting had discussed my case and a plan for my care was now in place and ready to go. The next stage was to get the operation done and dusted. I was admitted on Monday the 30th November for my pre op procedures including the need for me to have an IV infusion of heparin with my op scheduled for the 2nd. The day arrived and Ben was his normal caring and compassionate self. Ben really did fill me with confidence that I was in safe hands and so it proved. The op was a success and Ben phoned my wife sharing the good news that the tumor was out and I could now concentrate on my convalescence. The team in the critical care unit could not have provided any better support and care. During the first few days they were on hand to help not only with my care but my mental health and overall wellbeing as well. Bev, Francis and Frank to name a few were there to look after me and they did a great job. A few days later I was moved to my own room on ward two where my care continued a pace with Leslie and Grace to name two being absolutely brilliant. I was then able to go home on Monday evening of the 7th. Each day whilst in the Spire I was visited by Ben at least once and more often than not twice a day to check up on my progress and all was good. It was great to get home and the post op recovery is going really well with the wound now settled and healing nicely. The best news was just around the corner and when the phone rang on Friday evening at 7.40pm. It was Ben who initially apologised for the late call on a Friday evening but when he told me that the tumor was out, the area was clear and I would not require any further treatment other than regular follow ups, that was the best early Christmas present anyone could get. I have a follow up with Ben on the 16th December to check up on my progress but hope this will be the last time I see this wonderful man for the next 12 months or at least until my next checkup. I just wanted to say a massive thank you to a truly amazing person along with his amazing team. From the very dark days of my initial procedure and diagnosis to the current time Ben has been wonderful. He is calm, professional and totally reassuring and should you ever be in the position to need a colorectal referral Ben Hornung should be at the top of your list. Thank you Ben and your great team

Ben is an amazing surgeon who you can see takes pride in what he does. I was lucky I was stable at the time and able to wait for Ben to become available after he was recommended by another surgeon. So the wait in hospital was certainly worth it as Ben did an amazing job. And to top it off he is a genuinely lovely man
