I recently underwent an endoscopic discectomy to address a prolapsed disc at my L5 vertebra. My consultation with Mr. Saxena was incredibly informative, where he thoroughly explained the available treatment options. Once we decided on the best course of action, the operation was promptly scheduled, and the wait time was surprisingly short. In the two weeks leading up to the surgery, I began to have some doubts and concerns. However, after arranging a meeting with Mr. Saxena to discuss my apprehensions, he patiently addressed all of my concerns and alleviated my anxieties. On the morning of the surgery, Dr. Saxena's calm and confident demeanor during our conversation reassured me greatly. He was also present when I regained consciousness after the procedure to inform me that everything had gone well. Within just a few hours post-surgery, I found myself able to stand and walk, which was a remarkable improvement. While I still experienced some nerve pain resulting from the damage caused by the slipped disc, it was significantly reduced. During the initial 4-6 weeks following the surgery, I encountered various symptoms and experiences, all of which were part of the natural healing process. Now, three months after the surgery, I feel wonderful. I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Saxena and his dedicated team at the Alexandra Hospital for their exceptional care and attention throughout this entire journey. I wholeheartedly recommend this type of surgery to anyone grappling with a prolapsed disc

In July 2023, I had the privilege of being under the care of Mr Saxena for a endoscopic lumbar discectomy. From the initial consultation to post-operative care, Mr Saxena exhibited unwavering professionalism, expertise, and compassion. The success of the surgery, which has significantly improved my health and quality of life, is a testament to Mr Saxena's exceptional skills and dedication. Their meticulous attention to detail, clear communication, and willingness to address my concerns and questions instilled confidence in me throughout the entire process. Mr Saxena not only performed the surgery with precision but also demonstrated genuine empathy and kindness, making a daunting medical experience more manageable. Their commitment to patient well-being extended beyond the operating room, and I always felt like I was in the best hands. I wholeheartedly recommend Mr Saxena to anyone in need of surgical expertise. Their unwavering dedication to their profession and their patients is truly commendable. I am immensely grateful for the exceptional care I received and for the positive impact Mr Saxena has had on my life. From my first meeting through to my post-op assessments, I knew I was in safe and experienced hands guided by a smart and wonderful brain and supported by a warm, compassionate, friendly and knowledgeable disposition. My care was second to none and my surgery was a very positive experience and my result has been excellent. I have been very fortunate to have found Mr Saxena who helped me through my early cauda equina syndrome with the minimum of fuss and bother. He is an outstanding surgeon and I should know, being a consultant myself! Thank you so much Ankur, you are a star in my eyes!

I had severe leg pain for over a year before I came to Dr. Saxena. He explained very clearly what was wrong and the options available to me to solve the problem and what the advantages and disadvantages were of each. The resulting spinal surgery solved all issues I had and resulted in no further leg pain and minimal scarring around the area. Overall, I would be happy to have Dr. Saxena as my Consultant again.

I developed coccydynia following the birth of my child in 2021. After trying physiotherapy, I was fortunate to be able to have more investigations into my pain and went to see Mr Saxena. I really valued the clear and thorough explanations of why I might be experiencing pain; insight into that area of the body and the next steps. Communication was great throughout. I was admitted for a day procedure at Manchester Spire and underwent manual manipulation of the coccyx and ganglion impar block - an injection of local anaesthetic and steroid around the nerves supplying the coccyx - under sedation. I was really nervous about the procedure as it's a sensitive area. But Mr Saxena put me at ease; explained everything to me. The whole team at Spire was great and it was really quick and efficient! I'm now fully discharged with no pain! Really happy and feel really lucky to have received that level of care.

Profile

I am a Consultant Neurosurgeon with specialisation in spinal disorders. I offer the latest surgical and non-surgical treatments relating to all spinal conditions and neurotrauma.

Most spinal problems can be managed non-operatively. However, if it comes to a stage that surgery is required, I prefer to offer my patients surgical solutions with minimally invasive and endoscopic techniques that are associated with faster recovery and less rate of complications. I have learnt these techniques from experts from many countries. I routinely collaborate and share my experience with colleagues in Europe and America.

The management of some spinal problems is complex. I believe such problems should be discussed in multi disciplinary team meetings to provide the best possible care for my patients. I am fortunate to work with excellent colleagues in the NHS / private sector and we regularly discuss the management of challenging problems in order to come up with comprehensive solutions. This also involves bringing in the latest technology like neuro-navigation, neurophysiological monitoring and spinal endoscopy to make surgery safer.

I am the director of neurosurgical training in the region. I am also an examiner for the final neurosurgical fellowship examination (FRCS) that is a requirement for a trainee to take up a consultant job in the UK. I find this extremely gratifying as it also helps me to keep myself updated with the latest developments in my specialty.
