Firstly, I would like to comment on the very positive experience we received from the surgeon, Mr Salomone Di Saverio. This started when we came to see him for the pre-op discussion. He explained the procedure thoroughly (sigmoid colectomy) and offered his personal and work email address in order that we could contact him with any concerns prior to the surgery which was booked for 23 March 2018. Due to my husband's condition, unfortunately, he had to be hospitalised for several days prior to his surgery and during this time I did contact Mr Di Saverio via email and he responded immediately with reassuring advice. The surgery itself was quite difficult, but Mr Di Saverio was able to carry this out without complications and obtain the end result both he and we wanted. Immediately following the operation that evening, I received an email from Mr Di Saverio explaining everything he had done and what he had found. The operation was carried out on the Friday afternoon and over the next few days, Mr Di Saverio visited my husband every day, sometimes twice a day, to see how he was. I was there on one occasion when he visited and once again he explained what he had done. On the Wednesday before Easter, Mr Di Saverio was flying back to Italy, but he kept in touch every day via email to ask how my husband was and asked me to keep in touch with updates and let me know how he was progressing. Also he said if we had any concerns, then we could contact him at any time. My husband was finally discharged on Monday 2 April 2018 after a 10 day stay in hospital and throughout the whole period, I was in contact with Mr Di Saverio on a daily basis and he provided me with plenty of reassurance during what was a very worrying time for both me and my husband. It would appear that the surgery has been successful and this can only be attributed to the skill of Mr Di Saverio who has gone above and beyond what I would normally expect. In my previous experience, the surgeon normally carries out the operation and then has minimal involvement afterwards, but Mr Di Saverio has been involved at every stage and both my husband and I truly believe that he is a genuine caring person who really wants to make a difference to people's lives. He is a true asset to the hospital.
