Having a long history of Spinal and Cervical stenosis and being offered surgery over the years it was not until my appointment with Mr Sharma on the 21/11/23 and my symptoms being examined and explained that l found l knew l could confidently accept the surgery l needed.Mr Sharma immediately put me at ease and his calm and confident approach was both comforting and reassuring. l had an MRI and at my return visit it was agreed that lumbar decompression was the way forward but l was also referred very promptly to Mr V Siva at St. Georges Hospital for examination and it was subsequently decided the lumbar decompression surgery should be addressed first followed up with a review of the cervical degeneration at a later date. l had the lumbar decompression surgery on 26/02/24 at which time Mr Sharma visited and explained his findings and a follow up appointment was arranged for 4/04/24. During my recuperation l also received a telephone call from Mr Sharma asking about my progress and l was delighted to report a substantial improvement and again l was very appreciative about his level of genuine interest and concern. At my follow my up appointment on 4/04/24 and details of the surgery explained l was delighted to report l am free of the severe leg pains and know l am making excellent progress .l reported l am now sleeping through the night without discomfort ,and know l can look forward to walk free of the debilitating symptoms and fatigue. l cannot speak more highly of Mr Sharma, it has been because he gave me the confidence to have the necessary surgery and his support and expertise, that l am able to move forward and enjoy my future. l intend to periodically write to Mr Sharma to let him know of my ongoing progress. With kind regards to Mr Sharma and his team. Sheila Skelhorn.

Mr Sharma is very knowledgeable and explains everything in a simple and understandable way. All through the process I felt that he understood what I was going through and in the end we agreed to operate which is a big decision but it was made very easy in conjunction with Mr Sharma and the whole process went amazingly well.

I was fortunate enough to be under Mr Sharma’s care as an inpatient at St Peter’s Hospital following a serious spinal injury. Mr Sharma has a very calming manner which was incredibly helpful during all stages, but particularly during the early stages of what can only be described as a very traumatic experience with unpredictable outcomes. Throughout my recovery, Mr Sharma’s professionalism, knowledge and balanced opinion has helped me manage my recovery and I cannot express enough how thankful I am to have had Mr Sharma as my Consultant.

I am extremely grateful to Mr Sharma identifying my problem and then operating to remedy it. After the surgery I found myself completely pain free and I am now looking forward to a full life. Mr Sharma was kind, empathic and clear in his explanations and advice. I highly recommend him to anyone requiring spinal surgery.

Profile

Aadhar Sharma was born and raised in Hampshire. He qualified from Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals and undertook basic surgical training in Essex. A year of research at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital followed, after which he gained a place on the prestigious Imperial North-West Thames training programme based at St Mary’s and Charing Cross Hospitals.

During his training, he spent two years at the major trauma centre at St Mary’s Hospital which included time with the spinal trauma unit where he gained invaluable experience of both orthopaedic and neurosurgical techniques in spinal surgery. He also worked in the high-volume spinal unit at the Royal Free London.

His senior registrar year was spent at the internationally renowned spinal unit at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital where he further broadened his skill base in managing adult and paediatric spinal deformity as well as complex and revision degenerative spinal cases.

During his training, he also received a comprehensive level of training in general orthopaedic trauma with an emphasis on major trauma.

His advanced fellowship was in the highly reputed spinal unit at Frimley Park Hospital. Here, he refined his techniques in all aspects of adult spinal surgery with an emphasis on minimally invasive and microscopic techniques but also in the whole range of spinal instrumented cases. He also refined his skills in emergency spinal surgery for cauda equina compression, spinal tumours, infection and fractures. He worked at Frimley and then St Peter’s as a locum consultant for a short stint before his substantive appointment.

Mr Sharma performs a wide range of spinal procedures including injections, microdiscectomies, decompressions and fusions across the whole length of the spine. He has a large spinal practice at Ashford and St Peter’s which encompasses elective and emergency cases.

He is widely published across the breadth of trauma and orthopaedic surgery and has presented his work internationally. He is also a recognised trainer for the KSS and London deaneries and is regularly invited to lecture to higher surgical trainees and postgraduate students.

During training, he completed a master’s degree from Imperial College London in Surgical Innovation. This introduced the principles of quality improvement which underline Mr Sharma’s practice to this day. This combined with his extensive background in research ensures that his patients will receive up to date methods and techniques of treatment which are at the same time underpinned with a solid evidence base.

Aside of his busy spinal practice, Mr Sharma is also a prolific trauma surgeon and participates on the trauma rota at the famed Rowley Bristow Unit at St Peter’s Hospital, Chertsey.

With a high level of expertise stemming from his unique experience, his opinion is regularly sought by his orthopaedic consultant colleagues as well as those from other disciplines on patients with spinal problems, both routine and complex.

Mr Sharma prides himself on his attention to detail when managing each of his patients. Great care is taken to explain any underlying problems in easy-to-understand terms with an emphasis on patient centred decision making on their treatment. The merits and potential pitfalls of each treatment option are laid out in a way that enables patients to make informed decisions on their care.
