I care for my partner and since he has been transferred under Dr Singh, the diagnosis of Bi-Polar has been changed to ADHD amongst other things. We just keep hitting a brick wall when it comes to organising consultations and follow up meetings. Yes he his good at listening to the problems, but obviously the team below him are substandard especially some of the CPN's and when the manager of Ty Derbyn happily holds a meeting with you in the entrance hall to Ty Derbyn, discussing private matters in the open, it does not fill you with confidence. Others might find this very harsh, but when you have been in the system for 20+ years then you might see it differently too. At this point we are still waiting on a CPN visit or even to be allocated one!

My husband has Bipolar disorder, which was incorrectly diagnosed for many years. He was transferred to the care of Dr Singh. From the first meeting with Dr Singh he has been nothing but supportive to my husband. He has listened to him ,understood him, shown good clinical judgement and understanding of his needs. He has been very clear about the options open to my husband without ever being patronising. He has given him hope when he was in the depths of despair. He has always been approachable and easy to talk to. I would add, as a carer that his support has been invaluable. We have telephoned asking advice, sometimes not knowing where to go next and he has always contacted us back, absolutely invaluable, knowing that you have somewhere to turn to when you need help.We can only say thank you and would highly recommend Dr Singh and his team.

It's not that Dr Singh is not a good psychiatrist. he is! He does listen and he he is always friendly and polite. The problem is that he probably has too many patients and is let down by his team! I have tried many times to contact Dr Singh for my husband and all you get when you ring the secretary is an answer machine. Despite leaving messages I never get return calls and it is incredibly frustrating and disheartening. As for frequency of appointments : I don't feel personally that my husband is seen enough and when he had a psychiatrist in a different area he was seen at least once a month. It seems that Dr Singh does not operate that way. However, when my husband has seen him he has been top notch and I have no complaints about his ability to do his job. Ty Derbyn itself just does not run smoothly. The lack of staff, the poor reception area staff does not help either! It just feels that cuts or lack of resources are lowering the standard of care that mental health patients receive these days.

Having been treated by Dr P.Singh for the greater part of the last 2 years I am quite disappointed to read some of the reviews on here. Dr Singh and his team have always been brilliant in my experience. Over the last two weeks I have had trouble getting through to Dr Singh or get my problem resolved but I have to say... He is a consultant psychiatrist, with what I'm sure is a considerable list of patients so to be fair he is extremely busy. I'm surprised some of you have only given one star for 'listening' when I've found him to be completely flexible, knowledgeable and has always been open minded and professional enough to listen and answer any questions I have had. A great Doctor with a Great team. Keep up the good work

Response from Dr Pritpal Singh

I am sorry for your experience. I am also very grateful for your feedback! From the 4th of July 2016 a log book has been created to record all telephone/voice-mail messages received. This will allow me to audit how the messages are responded to. I have created time in my calendar on Thursday's to return telephone calls. I have asked that if the person leaving the message requires an urgent response and cannot wait for a call back on Thursday that they be relayed to the 'Duty Person' at the community mental health team who will be able to get back to you in a much quicker time frame. I will keep you posted by auditing how this new system works. (reply posted on 8.7.16 @ 09.22 hrs)

Profile

Tell me about your experience of Care and Treatment by the Wrexham Community Mental Health Team.
I work as a Adult Psychiatrist with the Wrexham County Mental Health Team providing specialist medical input for patients with serious and enduring mental illness.

Clinical assessments focus on developing a joint understanding of difficulties faced by patients which inform the next steps to be taken. Significant family members, carers are encouraged to participate in discussions around diagnosis and treatment. The ultimate aim is to help patients develop a capacity for self management by means of education, informed decision making and full participation in treatment decisions.

I am very keen for my patients and their carers to become involved in teaching and training of mental health professionals. I am setting up a pilot project with HAFAL, aiming to highlight to medical students/junior doctors to understand patient experience of living in the community whilst coping with mental illness.

In addition to my clinical work I am an Executive Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in Wales. I recently took on the role of Lead for Mentoring of Psychiatrists in Wales.
