What can I say? Having been referred to Dr Singh my relative was full of hope but this quickly diminished when we realised you actually never see him! No follow up appointments to check how you are! He says you can ring his clinic to ask him to call or to arrange an appointment but this is simply not the case! You do not receive a return phone call neither do you have an appointment! What is the point in a psychiatrist that you never get to see? I am under the impression he is looking for a more management related role so in the meanwhile my relative and others are just wandering in the dark!

Response from Dr Pritpal Singh

All GP referrals for mental health assessment are screened daily at a 'Single Point of Access' (GPs who may have identified mental health needs in primary care can refer to the Single Point of Access) by a team of experienced mental health professionals. Based on nature of input required a multidisciplinary decision is made as follows: -sign post referral to the most appropriate service - which may include primary care mental health team, psychological therapies, third sector counselling services. -screening by Community Mental health team and if appropriate a further specialist assessment in my clinic. -specialist medical assessment in my clinic Follow up telephone appointments were introduced due to shortage of clinic appointments available and used to follow up patients whose mental health has stabilized and are back in work.

No regular appointments and no follow through checkups! Well mannered chap and friendly but seems more interested in management side of things than looking after his patients! My husband is left to deal with his issues with no support and no appointments for months on end! We are told we only have to ring Dr Singh's secretary to get an appointment or phone call but despite doing that we are never contacted or replied too! My husband got admitted to a psych hospital in Ayrshire for 4 months and only because my sister in law got him to see a local psychiatrist up there! -- we were that desperate!

I am really sorry to hear about your experience! A large share of the credit for good patient experience is down to the solid administrative support I have received over the years. I will will raise the issue of how telephone call messages are recorded and followed up with the Community Mental Health Team.

Your Candid feed back is much appreciated! Please accept my sincere apologies for your poor experience. Your feedback raises fundamental questions about access to clinical care! It is by chance that i spotted this review today. Previously when I have received a 'review' the website would notify me and ask me to respond. It has not happened on this occasion. Again there has been a 'delay' in notifying me!. I note that you had commented on the 8th and today is the 23rd of Jan. Clearly there has to be a more efficient way of providing continuous feedback about services provided by my team and I. I am not sure if you will be notified of my reply today. If so I would suggest the following: 1. If you urgently need help please contact the Emergency Services. 2. Please ring my office on 01978726750 (Monday-Friday) and ask to speak to the 'duty officer' to discuss your care and treatment. They will also be able to coordinate a clinic appointment with me. I would like to once again apologise for your poor experience. I will be discussing this feedback with my Community Team and Administrative support shortly.

Dr Singh has always been professional, understanding, easy to talk to and treats me with respect during appointments. He seems to care, and was able to suggest the most appropriate treatment and medication for my specific issues. He asked for my feedback at follow up appointments, which he then used to modify my care plan to best suit my personal needs. In my opinion he seems to keep up to date with research and his patients should benefit from this.

Working as a health care provider, I often overlooked my own health problems for many years and finally came to a point of crisis. After several consultations with Dr. Singh, I was given a diagnosis and sensible management plan, which I am still under review. From the start, Dr. Singh treated me with respect and paid much attention to my history. He was always understanding, supportive and humble. Dr. Singh provided adequate and relevant information about my condition and also spent time to answer my queries. My skepticism about my diagnosis soon faded and I began to understand the complexity of my problems. I have full confidence of the knowledge and experience of Dr. Singh and would not hesitate to recommend his specialty. The care I received was of excellent standard and beyond my expectations. This also includes community support and out of hour service, despite NHS spending restrictions and increasing workload. Overall, I cannot fault the mental health and emergency services at Wrexham Maelor Hospital.

Profile

Tell me about your experience of Care and Treatment by the Wrexham Community Mental Health Team.
I work as a Adult Psychiatrist with the Wrexham County Mental Health Team providing specialist medical input for patients with serious and enduring mental illness.

Clinical assessments focus on developing a joint understanding of difficulties faced by patients which inform the next steps to be taken. Significant family members, carers are encouraged to participate in discussions around diagnosis and treatment. The ultimate aim is to help patients develop a capacity for self management by means of education, informed decision making and full participation in treatment decisions.

I am very keen for my patients and their carers to become involved in teaching and training of mental health professionals. I am setting up a pilot project with HAFAL, aiming to highlight to medical students/junior doctors to understand patient experience of living in the community whilst coping with mental illness.

In addition to my clinical work I am an Executive Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in Wales. I recently took on the role of Lead for Mentoring of Psychiatrists in Wales.
