He was both helpful and attentive. All went well though my leg was numb for rather longer than anticipated (60 hours)

Dr Uncles was obviously very well liked by the staff at Goring Hall and this made me feel relaxed prior to my operation. He was very pleasant and thorough at our first meeting and I felt very safe in his care from the outset. He explained everything and made sure I knew what to expect at every juncture. This was my first time having general anaesthesia and so I was grateful for his kind, thorough and professional manner.

Dr Uncles talked to me before and after my operation in Worthing Hospital. He told me exactly what was going to happen, listened to me carefully and answered all my questions. After the operation he checked and reassured me I was fully recovered and I was experiencing no post-op problems.

Dr David Uncles was my anesthetist when visiting Goring Hall Hospital. From the moment I met him I felt in safe hands and he made me feel very comfortable. He explained everything to me thoroughly and was kind, warm and funny which always helps when you're feeling anxious. I went off to sleep very comfortably and woke up even more so which is unusual for me. I would highly recommend Dr David Uncles to anyone.

I had no problems with Dr Uncles’s care before or during the operation. He was attentive and courteous. However I was sick several times the following day. I have no way of knowing if this was in any way related to my anaesthetic treatment or an allergic reaction. It would be helpful for any future operations involving anaesthetics to know what the reason may have been for my sickness, particularly if related to allergic reaction to any particular anaesthetic.

Response from Dr David Uncles

You have descibed your unfortunate experience of Post-Operative-Nausea and Vomiting (PONV) very clearly. It was obviously miserable for you. PONV is a condition that we all take very seriously. We employ an variety of drugs with anti-sickness activity to mitigate PONV, however sometimes, despite our best efforts it still occurs. Unfortunately some patients seem to be susceptible to PONV when others won't be. PONV is often mutifactorial dependent on the nature of the operation, smoking status, existing medical condions and strong pain relieving drugs. I am confident that a true severe allergic reaction which would most likely have manifested with specific and characteristic signs would have ben identified during your stay in hospital. I would encourage you to highlight your previous experience of PONV if you were to attend hospital in the future, when additional measures could be taken to try to reduce the liklihood of this unfortunate consequence of having an operation.

Profile

I am a specialist Anaesthetist with interests in Obstetric, Ambulatory and Inpatient anaesthesia. I employ a variety of anaesthetic techniques including general or regional anaesthesia, although I often use them in combination to optimise and enhance patients' peri and post-operative experience.
I am dedicated to putting the patient first through the provision of safe and reassuring care delivered in conjunction with my colleagues and associates.
I was present at the inauguration of the Helsinki Declaration in June 2010. This enshrines the values essential to the promotion of the highest professional and safety standards expected of anaesthetists. It is my hope to match or even exceed the expectations of patients who place their trust in me.
