He gave me a hip replacement 5 years ago. The initial diagnosis was thorough and gave me direct feedback and suggestions. The operation was a success thanks to him and the team around him. Since then annual reviews have taken place always in an efficient and informative manner. I have had a good experience with my hip and I have been reassured by his comments that "it looks like it was put in yesterday". Great service from a perfect professional.

An amazing and extremely talented Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Mr Lee Longstaff, from initial appointment at the Washington Spire Hospital put me immediately at ease. He was calming and informative when explaining the procedure for keyhole surgery to repair a huge bucket handle tear in my right knee. Whilst he did so in detail, it was in language that was easy to understand. Having previously been daunted by the prospect of surgery, he allayed any fears that I had and I felt he was someone that I could trust and that I was in the safe hands of this professional and exceptionally skilled surgeon. On the day of surgery at Tyneside Surgical Services based at Queen Victoria Hospital Gateshead, I met with Mr Longstaff who explained he had reviewed my medical notes and MRI in detail and was confident that surgery would be successful and I would regain the mobility I previously had prior to my injury. He reiterated the procedure and again reassured me and filled me with absolute confidence. i was then introduced to nursing staff and had a consultation with the Anaesthetist, Mr Matthew Downes. I explained I had a needle phobia when it came to insertion into veins following a bad experience I suffered as a child. He was extremely sympathetic and stated he would ensure it was as least traumatic for me as possible. Different methods of anaesthesia were explained to me and I was wheeled into the pre-operating theatre. Mr Downes was very calming and took my hand and lowered it to the floor where he crouched down so not to let me see the needle which he inserted into the back of my hand which I did not even feel. Following the knee arthroscopy and within the matter of hours I was travelling home. Mr Longstaff and his team had successfully carried out a repair to a huge bucket handle tear of the cartledge on my right knee which had flipped over backwards and had left me unable to weight bear and in a wheelchair for over two months. I was able to walk the same day although with some difficulty as my quads had weakened significantly over the period. The inside of my knee whilst sore felt like it was meant to and dare I say it 'brand new'. Appropriate advices were given regards pain relief and exercises and I was advised to access physiotherapy in my local area to strengthen my knee and quads. The difference in my knee is absolutely astonishing, there is hardly any scarring from the neat stitches and I am now well on the road to recovery. I wish to thank Mr Longstaff and his very dedicated team of professionals at Tyneside Surgical Services for such a smooth and stress free procedure from start to finish. I would have no hesitation in recommending Mr Longstaff for anyone contemplating knee or hip surgery in the future. An absolutely first Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and service.
