Profile

Consultant Ophthalmologist in the NHS at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, with a private practice at Spire Claremont Hospital.

I am the Vitreo-Retinal Lead for Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and the Clinical Governance Lead for Ophthalmology, ensuring best practice and patient safety throughout the Trust. I was awarded Clinical Excellence Award for my commitment to patient care and safety.

I graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Malta in 2004, then moving to the UK where I completed Ophthalmology specialist training before undergoing specialised training in Vitreo-Retinal Surgery in 2012-13. I was appointed as a Consultant in Aberdeen, after which I completed further Fellowship Training in Vitreo-Retinal Surgery in Sydney Eye Hospital, Australia before being appointed as a Consultant in Sheffield in 2016.

During my career I have been awarded numerous prizes including the Bayer Educational Grant Award, Novartis Retina Case Study Award, Pfizer Scottish Ophthalmological Travel Award and the BriSCEV (British Society for Clinical Electrophysiology of Vision) prize.

I am an Honorary Senior Lecturer for The University of Sheffield, teaching ophthalmology to medical students at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital and takes part in undergraduate admission interviews. I also teach ophthalmology trainees and trains vitreo-retinal Fellows. I'm an educational supervisor to junior ophthalmologists, as well as a Microsurgical Skills Trainer and Examiner for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists.
