I was referred to Mr Kaliaperumal and was quickly diagnosed as having obstructive hydrocephalus, and needed to have surgery to relieve the symptoms. I saw him at the new Department of Clinical Neurosciences (DCN) located in the Royal Hospital for Sick Children. Mr Kaliaperumal was very attentive, explained everything very clearly before the procedure, and answered all of my questions. He has a very calm manner and is honest about the pros and cons of the operation. I never felt as if I was ‘just another patient’ - Mr Kaliaperumal really sees people as individuals and and is skilled at building connections with his patients in my experience. I spoke to him just before the procedure, just after it, and again the following day on the ward before I went home. When he came to see me on the ward, the day after the operation, Mr Kaliaperumal spent some time with me, going over what I should expect once I was home, and over the longer term. He referred me immediately for some additional assessment as I had previously been struggling a little with balance, however ongoing assistance was not necessary. I very much appreciated the time he spent going over what must be very routine questions (as I’m sure everyone must ask the same things!) and not once did I feel that my questions were unnecessary or that I was receiving a ‘rote response’. Mr Kaliaperumal took care to ensure that his responses related directly to my experiences and circumstances. The only request I would have is that some written information was shared at the same time - immediately after surgery it is difficult to retain all of the information provided and having something in writing would provide some reference material to look at later. Mr Kaliaperumal demonstrates excellence in patient care every day, and I was very grateful to receive treatment from someone who expresses genuine care about patient outcomes. My surgery was ‘textbook’ and has been very effective so far. I have no doubt that Mr Kaliaperumal’s attention to detail and oversight, as well as the learning from his previous experience of similar operations, made a significant contribution to the textbook nature of the surgery. I cannot recommend Mr Kaliaperumal highly enough if you are considering a neurosurgery appointment.

This man quickly operated twice on our son at 12 days old and 19 days old to remove a brain tumour. He was very positive but realistic about the risks and all that was involved in the procedure. He was calm , approachable and he listened to our questions.

I cannot express enough how wonderful Mr Kaliaperumal is. My 7 year old collapsed very suddenly and needed emergency neurosurgery. It was terrifying and his calm manner was extremely reassuring at a time when we were in utter panic. The surgery itself went really well and my son has a scar that is almost entirely hidden within his hair line. Great care was taken with this which is really appreciated. At reviews he is kind, compassionate and extremely knowledgeable. He lists out the options and spends time going through each of them and the likely outcomes. He also has a lovely manner with my son and includes him, chatting easily with him and making him laugh. An absolute star. He saved my little boys life and my sanity.

Mr Kaliaperumal is an excellent surgeon, health care provider and person. We are very grateful we were referred to him for my craniotomy. I had a (benign) meningioma brain tumour that was unknowingly causing havoc in my life for about a year and a half. Mr Kaliaperumal and his excellent team (including Mr Wiggins) successfully removed the tumour and I was up and walking the very next day. Although my circumstance and procedure were “uncomplicated” (e.g. benign tumour, no seizures or stroke during surgery), the overall experience has been, of course, traumatic. Like others who went through surgery during Covid, it was exceptionally difficult to cope without family at the hospital and the overall stress of this pandemic. Beyond the surgery itself, getting back to a new “normal” life after a brain tumour is challenging. Mr Kaliaperumal understands the bigger picture of patient well-being and goes out of his way to support you beyond the specific medical problem. He has a thoughtful way of encouraging you, while also listening to your concerns. He and his staff (thank you, Sharon!) are helpful and take the time to listen. I can tell from the other reviews that many of his patients felt this way too, and I can only assume he takes this holistic approach to all of his patients. He also has a pretty good sense of humour, making everyone feel a bit more at ease. We are originally from the U.S. and although we are very grateful for the NHS, were a bit concerned about how major brain surgery would work in a public health care system. I must admit, we and our family researched neurosurgeons to see if the quality of care would be better here or back in the states. We found Mr Kaliaperumal’s record outstanding and, after meeting him, were assured my life was in good hands. Thank you, Mr Kaliaperumal!

I am now 18mths post op and can not praise Mr Kaliaperumal enough. From day one he put me at ease and explained everything to me. He has the knack of making you feel you are the only patient he has and makes you feel relaxed in his company. I actually look forward to my appointments with him. I would trust him with my life (oh I actually did). What a lovely, clever man and also a very good artist :)
