Dr Mark Wright has been a full time NHS consultant hepatologist in Southampton for 10 years and is clinical lead for the liver service. He devotes his time between in and out patient hepatology and deals with the full range of liver diseases. He has a special interest in viral hepatitis, developed over the last 15 years during which time he has been keenly involved with trials of the new treatments. Prior to taking his post in Southampton, Mark gained invaluable clinical and research experience in the liver unit at St Mary's Hospital London, where he coordinated a national Hepatitis C treatment trial and co- wrote a pivotal health economic model which forms the basis of evaluations for the new therapies. His other key research achievement was the observation that procoagulant genes drive liver fibrosis in HCV infected individuals which has gone on to spawn a whole field of interest in this area. More recently Mark has set up the Wessex HCV network and been the lead for delivering the HCV early access programme in his locale. Marks other main clinical interests are in therapeutic endoscopy particularly ERCP (Endoscopy of the Bile ducts) where he has one of the largest case loads in the UK. Over the past 3 years Mark has transformed the service adding 2 new weekly lists (to make a total of 5 lists per week) greatly increasing capacity. In order to achieve his he has mentored 2 consultant colleagues to independent practice. Research interests include projects in portal hypertension and infection, as well as prognosis in cirrhosis. Mark lives in the New Forest with his family and their many pets. He sails dinghies, climbs mountains and runs a lot, including the occasional marathon.
I have been treated by Dr.Wright on a number of occasions - when he was performing his duties as gastro/hepatology consultant, and when he was actually performing procedures (endoscopy and ERCP). I have always found him patient, friendly, and knowledgeable - whilst remaining professional throughout. He is very knowledgable (naturally) but discusses things in an easy-to-understand and easy-going manner, always putting you at your ease before and during procedures.
