I would like to thank Dr Wilkinson for saving my life, with his amazing team, last July 2020 at Southampton University Hospital. He correctly and intuitively recognised the gravity of my symptoms relayed to him whilst on call, he traveled from his home to SUH in the middle of the night, summoned his Cath lab team and with extraordinary skill managed to stent and restore flow to a coronary artery occluded by a replacement aortic valve I had had surgery for two weeks earlier. His positive and caring manner will remain with me for as long as I live. I cannot recommend him more highly. MCH

I would like to thank Dr Wilkinson for so quickly and accurately diagnosing my condition, previously undiagnosed because of my atypical angina symptoms. He then very quickly arranged for me to undergo angiograms and a stent insertion procedure, so protecting me from a future, possibly fatal, heart attack. Conscious, under local anaesthesia, I was aware of the teamwork involved and just how hard Dr Wilkinson and his team work throughout what seems such a complex procedure. Throughout I was kept informed of what to expect and I was comforted by Dr Wilkinson's assured manner and the nursing staff around me. I am grateful to Dr Wilkinson for his kind and friendly manner and for appreciating my anxiety prior to my admission. For anyone anxious about undergoing this procedure, you can confidently place your trust in the skill and dedication of Dr Wilkinson and his team, I would also like to thank Dr Wilkinson's secretary, Ms de Tisi, for dealing with my queries in a kind and friendly manner.

I had suffered a heart attack and was rushed by Ambulance to Southampton General Hospital and taken direct to the cath lab. Dr James and his team greeted me at the entrance and started treating me without any delay. He kept me advised throughout the procedure and in my view he saved my life myself and family are extremely grateful to him and the whole team. 24/07/19

As a recent patient of Dr James at the Southampton General Hospital's cardiac unit I can thoroughly and highly recommend him as someone to help you with your hear problems. I am currently waiting to hear from James and the team what they think might be best for me and my problems but save to say that I have comeplete faith in James and his excellent team. Thank you James, keep up the excellent work. Chris Kennard

Profile

Dr James Richard Wilkinson is a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist (heart specialist) based at Southampton and Lymington. He previously did procedure lists at Salisbury (2011-2014).

His particular area of expertise is Coronary Intervention. He regularly treats heart attack patients as well as more stable patients. This involves fixing the arteries that supply your heart with small balloons and metal scaffolds called 'stents'. He specialises in doing this through the artery in the wrist (radial artery) as it is safer and more comfortable for patients. He has a particular interest in opening arteries that have been blocked a long time (chronic total occlusions). He also has a specialist interest in a specialist procedure to treat high blood pressure (called renal denervation) and has set up this new service in Southampton. He also inserts pacemakers and does angiograms.

In addition to his procedure lists he also see's patients in clinic for evaluation of any symptoms that could be due to heart disease such as: breathlessness, chest pain, palpitations and blackouts. He is particularly interested in angina and new procedures to help this. He participates in a busy on-call rota for Southampton's heart attack service and does ward rounds. A majority of his work is NHS but he does see some patients privately at Southampton and Lymington. He participates in local research and education on a national level.
