Dr Wilkinson has a warm and caring manner and I felt he had time to explore my issues. He has an aire of authority but explained things in a clear and understandable way. I came away reassured and with a good grasp of the medical position and what I should do and what medical actions were going to happen next. Thinking about it afterwards my only question was that if everything is OK with my heart what triggered the increase in heart rate when I had the anesthetic and was there anything I should do differently the next time.

Used great skill and persistence to treat me and he retained my confidence throughout the long procedure. Since the procedure he has maintained good contact; he listened to me and gave me a thorough explanation and considered opinion.

I felt the attention I received by all in the cardiology unit was professional, very caring which made me feel as though I was the only patient being seen as I received 100% of their time. After meeting with Doctor James Wilkinson I felt extremely reassured about my heart condition, he took the time to explain and talk me through all the problems that I had previously encountered regarding my condition and the ability to speak to him if I had any further concerns.

Profile

Dr James Richard Wilkinson is a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist (heart specialist) based at Southampton and Lymington. He previously did procedure lists at Salisbury (2011-2014).

His particular area of expertise is Coronary Intervention. He regularly treats heart attack patients as well as more stable patients. This involves fixing the arteries that supply your heart with small balloons and metal scaffolds called 'stents'. He specialises in doing this through the artery in the wrist (radial artery) as it is safer and more comfortable for patients. He has a particular interest in opening arteries that have been blocked a long time (chronic total occlusions). He also has a specialist interest in a specialist procedure to treat high blood pressure (called renal denervation) and has set up this new service in Southampton. He also inserts pacemakers and does angiograms.

In addition to his procedure lists he also see's patients in clinic for evaluation of any symptoms that could be due to heart disease such as: breathlessness, chest pain, palpitations and blackouts. He is particularly interested in angina and new procedures to help this. He participates in a busy on-call rota for Southampton's heart attack service and does ward rounds. A majority of his work is NHS but he does see some patients privately at Southampton and Lymington. He participates in local research and education on a national level.
