I have just reached the end of about five years of successful prostate cancer treatment under Dr Birtle, and today I was, as it were, handed back to my GP's long-term supervision. Although obviously relieved to have arrived at this stage, I found it very moving to say goodbye, for I have probably never owed quite so much to any one person before. Her advice has been always authoritative, sound, sensitive and honest. The treatment has been at times very difficult to cope with (I am mostly thinking here about the emotional problems associated with what seems to be a permanent loss of sexual function and libido), but I am confident that the treatment was the very best that could be offered. Monitoring of the progress of my condition has been faultless and reassuring. In short, I could not have hoped to be treated by a finer doctor, and I believe it would have been impossible for her to have taken greater care of me, given the present state of knowledge. I consider myself greatly privileged, and will always be deeply grateful to her. Alan Davis

She is a very caring and professional doctor who has the patient's best interests at heart. She has answered all of our questions and also provided us with information for the questions we never thought to ask. All information is broken down into language and explanations that don't include medical jargon and Alison is cheerful and positive and puts us at ease through what is a very traumatic time.

Dr Birtle explains the diagnosis, what the treatment will be all in plain english and then she gets on and gets action. She is very approachable, you can ask her any questions and she will answer in plain english which we can understand. She is a star.

I have been under the care of Dr. Birtle now for about 5 years. I t is quite recently that I was was given a terminal prognosis. Dr. Birtle handled this difficult situation with compassion and care, without backing away from the reality of the message. Throughout the last 5 years she has always been straight with me and given me all the information that she has available on my condition at that time. Dr. Birtle has always taken time to explain the stage of both my condition and of the treatment that I'm receiving. The Doctor can, however, be quite sharp, particularly if it appears that the patient hasn't been listening. Overall, I cannot thank Dr. Birtle enough for the care she has given to me and I would have no reservations whatsoever recommending her to someone who I really cared about - but remember, keep listening!

Dr Birtle is very knowledgeable and transmits her care to me in a highly informed manner. Her advice and treatment decisions are very creative and reveal a very novel pathway for me to follow in order to become well again. This is always made clear to me as patient in a highly acceptable format. She discuses my case openly so that observers, like my wife for example, develop an informative understanding so that they can help me too. It is not surprising that Dr Birtle is contributing to clinical research and is showing strong leadership qualities that are not only bringing a very positive reputation both to her and her team but also in a brilliant sense to the Royal Preston hospital.
