I felt the phone call from Dr Alison Birtle was very informative and upbeat. It was good that my wife could for once hear everything and take notes as this was the first time my wife was able to be with me since my diagnosis.

Dr Birtle made me feel like I was her only patient throughout, from my 1st consultation face to face (before Covid 19) right the way up to my last video call with her. I started my treatment just before the epidemic hit the UK and continued throughout without having a single appointment, treatment or scan delayed / cancelled. Dr Birtle is very straight, factual and honest, she delivers the information in a caring and considerate way. I liked her positive attitude to the situation, this is the problem and this is how we are going to fix it. I am now cancer free thanks to Dr Birtle.

I had my first consultation via a video link on Friday the 10th of July 2020, I was very impressed with all the information she gave me. It was a very informative conversation with a Doctor that has a great passion for the excellent treatment they will provide. she explained to me every aspect of the treatment in great detail. I am very confident that if i decide to go down this line of treatment it will very successful.

I recently had a video conference with Dr Birtle regarding prostate radiotherapy and could not have been more impressed by her expertise, professionalism, inter-personal skills, genuine warmth and obvious desire to put me at ease. During the 50 minute consultation she took me through the treatment process very thoroughly and gave me every opportunity to ask questions. At the end I was most reassured and had every confidence that I would receive the best possible attention. That confidence was strengthened further when this morning, only 3 days after the consultation, I received a copy of the report that had been sent to the managing consultant. It was extremely detailed and accurately covered every part of our discussion. In my experience such efficiency is rare, particularly from medical professionals whose work is so highly pressurised. Thank you.

I had a video consultation — my first ever! — with Dr Birtle a couple of days ago, in which she explained the process, likely outcomes and possible side-effects of radiotherapeutic treatment for localised prostate cancer. Throughout our 1-hour consultation she made me feel entirely at ease, and as well as giving a very clear and understandable exposition of what was involved in radiotherapy she took time to listen to my questions and give me the answers I needed. By the end of the hour I was not only much wiser than at the start, but also much less anxious. I am most grateful for her time. I still have to decide between radiotherapy and surgery, but have every confidence that if I opt for the former I will be in good hands. One small point about the process of the consultation: I did not know in advance whether it would involve Skype, or Zoom, or whatever, and was somewhat anxious because my broadband does not always support these very well. In the event I got a text message on my smartphone linking me to an NHS app, and things were fine from then on. If this is the normal mode of video consultations, it would help if NHS appointments staff could let the patient know that in advance, when booking the consultation slot.

Response from Dr Alison Birtle

Thanks so much for this. At the moment i dont have any support to contact patients or let them know beforehand. So the text message comes from me, setting things up. The Trusts are working towards a system where the clerical team calls before hand and sends an email with information on, to allow you to check camera and mic etc beforehand and to reduce all the time wasted when i try and do it all myself. It would be really useful if you could feed this back to the Trust . I was in my Morecambe Bay Hospitals Trust Capacity so it would really help getting this set up for oncology if you could give your feedback to the Trust via the PALS office. With very best wishes Alison Birtle
