Review of Queen’s - Accident & Emergency
13th March 2024

The staff were polite and very hard working in a very stressful environment where there weren’t enough doctors and the whole system seemed to get more stretched the later the day got. Told after a 10 hour wait that we wouldn’t be seen for possibly another 10 hours! First time I’ve seen patients getting angry and staff having to people manage the situation. The toilets looked dirty and I can’t say I remember seeing anyone cleaning them. Toilet seats were alway wet- detergent or urine I don’t know?? In the end I went to a different hospital (local for me) and was treated quickly and efficiently and had my operation without having to wait very long.

Suggested improvements
More doctors on hand to deal with not just the severe injuries. Cleaner environment. More communication as the announcement that we were unlike to be seen that night was only vocalised because the patients were getting irritable and were constantly venting their frustrations on the nurses and asking what was happening as we had already waited 3 hours for a doctor to read our notes.

16 hours in the evening raft unit, 5 hours before I got a name.badge and then i had to ask for it three times. nobody took bloods for five hours when it should have been done.asap after arrival by LAS. Nobody could explain why I had a chest x Ray for vertigo, not even the doctor who treated me. They failed to post my blood tests on the system according to the doctor. 15 hours and 50 mins to see the doctor which lasted for 10 minutes. Patients arriving with three adult relatives then pretending to be iller than they were to queue jump. The relatives then all laughed as they left. No food offered in 16 hours just cups of tea. I had medication to take but when I asked if I should take it nobody gave me an answer. The doctor I saw was compassionate and explained my problem and what to do about it. But it took nearly 16 hours for a 10 minute consultation. I saw a complete change of shift arrived at 17.30 and left at 10.00 hrs the next morning.

Suggested improvements
See all of the above in why I gave the answers I did. Keep track of patients , explain to patients why things were being done , monitor patients regularly. Supply some sort of food after 8 hours. Have more doctors. Allow only one relative per patient unless patient is likely to die.

It was horrendous like a third world country. Got there around 4.30 pm and discharged myself at midnight. The next morning at 10 am I got a phone call to say that I am ready to be seen !!!! Some one will die in the corridors waiting to be seen One old man was desperate to go to the toilet. He was terrified of losing his dignity as he had been waiting for 2 hours to get help to go to the toilet. I have no idea if he received it

Suggested improvements
Everything. It needs a complete overhaul to how you manage the A&E department as it is certainly not working in its current state. One old man was desperate to go to the toilet and was terrified of losing his dignity on the trolley. I have no idea if he got help but he had been asking for 2 hours for help. Someone will die in the corridors waiting to be seen it’s just a matter of time. You need to urgently review and change the current practice as it certainly isn’t working at this time

It was a shocking experience. I work in the NHS and I know that we’re short staffed however, I cannot believe all that I saw during my stay at A&E

Suggested improvements
Ensure that you have enough staff, if you were staffed to capacity then you need more staff. Ensure that you have enough cups for people to have water. There were no cups so my daughter who accompanied me was given a water jug to drink from. Vulnerable patients were left alone for long periods of time.

Because that’s how I was treated, if the way I had been treated was different, I would have altered my scoring.
