In July 2023 I was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer. The only option I was offered by the NHS was “Watchful Waiting”, and as my cancer developed, hormone treatment to slow the progress of my cancer. I asked my consultant if the roles were reversed would he be happy to accept my prognosis, he said no! He then referred me to Professor Prasanna Sooriakumaran (Professor PS) at the Cleveland Clinic London (CCL). I was reluctant to go to London as I live in Stratford upon Avon and the logistics of traveling to London, parking, hotel accommodation (The CCL offer some excellent packages to cover these areas) and the lack of available close support from family and friends, seemed somewhat daunting. However, in my meetings with Professor PS I became convinced he was the right choice to be my consultant. Professor PS was understanding of my concerns, outlined all my options in detail, and explained why a Radical Prostatectomy would be my best option. He took me through all the stages of the procedure from diagnosis to how my operation would be performed to recovery. Professor PS treated me with respect, understanding and kindness and I was conscious I was dealing with someone at the very top of their game. He was very honest with me explaining that my weight and size of my prostate would make the operation more complicated. I heeded his advice and lost two stone and generally ensured my fitness levels improved before the date of my operation. Fortunately, even with the complications of my weight and the extensive reconstructive surgery required, my radical prostatectomy was a complete success. My recovery has been nothing less than spectacular. The nursing staff at the Cleveland Clinic were excellent. After the surgery I had no pain and no discomfort. I was able to get up the day after my operation and walk about and went home two days later. After 3 weeks I had my catheter removed and was discharged from the CCL. Professor PS kept in touch with me during this period and made time to visit me just before I was discharged. The next stage is up to me; to continue my weight loss, improve my fitness and most importantly do my pelvic floor exercises. I owe Professor PS a great debt as he has given me a second chance, one I do not intend to waste. I would also like to thank Kristy Webb, Professor PS ‘s secretary, who was brilliant in sorting out any admin or general referrals, queries, whatever was required. Also, Jacqui Duncan {Urology Advanced Nurse Practitioner} fixer supreme and provider of all levels of support. Both ladies were utter professionals, kind, understanding and supportive of me at all times.

Profile

Professor Prasanna Sooriakumaran, globally known by his initials PS, is a Professor of Urology at Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine and the Lead for Urology at Cleveland Clinic London. He is a world leader in prostate cancer care. Professor Sooriakumaran is the only surgeon to win the University of Surrey’s Alumni Achievement Award for his “significant contributions to society and the field of prostate cancer care”. He was triple nominated for the Crystal Matula Award, awarded to the most promising young academic urologist in Europe.

Professor Sooriakumaran specialises in Retzius-sparing robotic prostatectomy, an operation that has far fewer side-effects than the standard robotic procedure in select prostate cancer patients. He is a world leader in this technique and produces world-class outcomes. Results after prostate cancer surgery are strongly related to the training of the surgeon who performs the operation, and Professor Sooriakumaran was trained by the world’s best: global pioneers of robotic surgery at Ivy League’s Cornell University in New York and the Nobel Prize-awarding Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. His mentors have a cumulative experience of over 20,000 robotic surgeries. Following his exceptional international training, he undertook a Senior Fellowship at the world-renowned Oxford University where he still holds a visiting appointment as a Senior Researcher.

Professor Sooriakumaran is the only urologist to top the London's Most Influential People in Healthcare List in the Evening Standard, the only urologist under 50 to be cited as one of the top 10 urologists in Britain in a Daily Mail poll of UK urologists, and the only urologist to be appointed as a Health Services Journal Judge for the prestigious Cancer Award. Professor Sooriakumaran also holds a Bronze National Clinical Excellence Award for his services to healthcare, and is a member of the London North-East regional sub-committee that scores these applications.

Professor Sooriakumaran has published over 200 scientific articles, tens of books/ book chapters, and won dozens of international and national awards; his research has generated a h-index of 37 and over 6000 citations, giving Professor Sooriakumaran unparalleled stature among UK robotic prostate cancer surgeons of his generation.

In spite of time spent on his work commitments, Professor Sooriakumaran is a family man and spends his spare time playing golf with his children and dining out with his wife.
