I am a generally fit and healthy 31 year old, but when I first met Dr Akmal, I was in a bad way. I had been in increasingly bad pain for five months, and had gotten to the point where I was walking with a stick and unable to stand straight. I had tried physio, osteopathy and a chiropractor. An MRI scan showed the culprit was a severely slipped disc pressing on the sciatic nerve, and Dr Akmal advised that injections and laser surgery were unlikely to fix it. He advised minimally invasive lumbar decompression surgery, and I was operated on two weeks later. It was a day procedure, and I was able to stand up straight only a few hours after the surgery. 8 weeks later, I am walking and moving normally and have had very little pain, even immediately after the operation. I have my life back and couldn't be more grateful.

After years of low back spasms both my ability and willingness to endure the pain ran out. I went to see Dr Mo Akmal who told me I had a nasty problem with a relatively simple solution. It was 10 weeks ago to the day I had the surgery to deal with 2 bulging discs, one of which was pushing significantly into the nerve. I feel physically and mentally transformed and I'm still within what would be considered the recovery period. Everyone I've dealt with at the London Spine Unit - be it on the phone or in person - have been good natured and good humoured and as a result I have absolutely no reservation in recommending them as professionals and all round good people.

If I could put 10 stars, I would. After many years of non surgical treatment, all without any major relief, surgery was now inevitable. As a Canadian, I was looking for the best state of the art spinal units in the world to undergo spinal fusion of my L4-L5. After consulting over 4 specialists, some in New York which is much closer to home, I chose Dr. Akmal and the spinal unit because the personalize treatment, from pre-op to post op was by far, superior to any other centers I had visited. Dr. Akmal is one of the best surgeons in the world but on top of that, he and the entire unit treat you like family and it is a true one-stop-shop from tests to surgery to physio all under the same roof. I am now on week 3 recovering from spinal fusion surgery. I was standing and walking 2 hours post surgery, even walked to the office from the hotel 2 days after surgery. Week 3, I no longer have any back or nerve pain and my numbness in my leg is completely gone. A true miracle, as my mother would say! I am forever grateful to Dr. Akmal and the entire team and would highly recommend them to anyone suffering from back pain.

I suffered from low back pain and pain in the left knee for some 18 months. From my first consultation with Mr. Akmal at the London Spine Unit I felt confident that I had come to the right person who could diagnose my condition, and propose a solution. I found Mr. Akmal most approachable, who displayed empathy with my condition and who could very quickly put me at my ease. He was always ready to discuss and patiently explain in words that I could understand the likely cause of my pain and discomfort. An MRI confirmed his initial diagnosis of stenosis in my lumber spine, but it also showed the presence of a facet joint cyst. Mr. Akmal carefully explained the minimal invasive surgical procedure he would carry out under sedation to relieve the pressure on nerves in my lower back. He subsequently carried out a three-level lumber decompression of my lumber spine, which included the removal the facet joint cyst and the insertion of a spinous interspacer. Within an hour of waking from sedation, I was able to walk comfortably, free from pain, and later that same day, I was able to go home. I am forever grateful to Mr. Akmal and his colleagues at the LSU for the first class treatment they gave me and which has freed me from pain and discomfort. I am confident that I could not have received better treatment anywhere.
