I have just had a stapedectomy performed by Jeremy Lavy and my life has been absolutely transformed. I now no longer need a hearing aid, I have no trouble hearing conversations in any environment and my enjoyment of music has increased tremendously. Before the operation even with a very expensive hearing aid I had great trouble hearing bass frequencies and now everything sounds so much better and richer. I play and sing in a small band and since the operation my singing has improved due to my more sensitive hearing. Jeremy's bedside manner before and during the operation was very reassuring. He instantly took my worries away and I felt that I was with the very best possible surgeon in the field. I whole experience could not have been better and I'm looking forward to seeing him again to have the stapes replaced on my left ear soon.

My Lavy performed a stapedectomy on my left ear in 2020 and completely restored my hearing. I returned in 2022 to have the stapedectomy performed on my right ear and again it was a complete success and my hearing has been restored. He is an amazing surgeon, he's friendly, personable and has great empathy and humour in his interactions. Due to Mr Lavy and his team, my quality of life has been improved significantly. I'm now able to hear and communicate in personal and professional environments. The Welbeck Hospital is state of the art and they've employed medical staff at the top of their game. I have complete confidence in their abilities.

I had a reconstruction of my ossicular chain with a titanium implant at the end of January 2022, under the care of Mr Lavy. The operation was very successful as my hearing has been restored to normal and I no longer need my hearing aid. It has massively improved my quality of life as I can really enjoy music again, I can hear such small details like birds singing, I've been told that I don't shout now when I talk and I feel less isolated in certain social situations as I often found it difficult to follow conversations with more than one person. All thanks to My lavy and his amazing team at UCLH. He did an amazing job and I felt very well looked after throughout the entire process, despite there being a global pandemic! I will forever be grateful to him, and would highly recommend him given his skills and bedside manner.

Failed stapedotomy operation. When it went wrong seem to disappear off the radar. Didn’t return my calls unless I really pushed is secretary. This surgeon is busy which in way is good as it shows he does a lot these operations but is not good when it goes wrong as he doesn’t give the impression that he has a lot of time for you. There’s a 0.4% chance of it going wrong according to him which I question and it went wrong for me which means now I have complete sensorineural hearing loss which is life changing. Big big regrets.

Response from Mr Jeremy Lavy

I am so sorry you have had a bad experience. Since the report is anonymous it is difficult for me to comment on the specific case however you do raise a really important issue which is that even though my dead ear rate is 0.4% (a figure I am happy to confirm from my database) that does mean that this devastating outcome does happen to 4 people in a thousand. If that happens to you it is obviously 100% and 0.4% is of no consolation. Unfortunately in surgery one can never achieve 100% outcomes. I have always strived through standardisation of my technique, maintaining high numbers of patients and using local anaesthetic (which gives me immediate feedback from the ear) to make my complication rate as low as possible. The decision to undergo surgery is always one that needs to be taken after due consideration of the risks involved. Whilst it does offer the opportunity of the best quality of hearing outcomes it is not risk free.

After living for over fifteen years with increasing deafness in both ears caused by Otosclerosis, and the numerous hearing tests, consultations and hearing aid fittings at several different hospitals, I was thankfully referred to Mr Lavy for Stapes surgery. At my first consultation with him, he took time to field my array of questions and set me at ease with his quiet confidence and personable nature. It was very reassuring to know I’d be in such safe and practiced hands. I have now had two Stapes operations (Stapedotomies) under Mr Lavy. The first was in Dec 2018 at the old RNTNE building. The operation was a complete success, and my only lament at the time of the operation was that the magic of the ‘hearing reveal’ was too short-lived! No sooner was I marvelling at the newfound experience of sound, than the dressing was placed in the ear to plunge me back into (relative) silence! I was so excited for the dressing removal, and I was not disappointed by the incredible results. It was amazing to be able to live without the use of a hearing aid. My second operation, postponed due to the pandemic, was finally performed at the end of Oct 2021 in the new UCH Grafton Way building, and thankfully, just as successfully as the first one. Mr Lavy excelled himself again, and his team are second to none. I understand that most or many hospitals perform this operation under General Anaesthetic – I am thankful that mine was done by Mr Lavy under local anaesthetic and sedation, (through the ear canal) which allowed me to be aware of my restored hearing the moment it happened, and enabled a swift recovery. I wholeheartedly recommend Mr Jeremy Lavy and his excellent team and all the staff who cared for me. I am forever grateful for what they have done for me, it has been truly life-changing to be able to hear again.
