David Hartwright is an orthopaedic surgeon in Winchester, Hampshire with a practice based at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital as well as Sarum Road BMI and Nuffield Wessex Hospitals. Although trained in general Orthopaedics and Trauma, he specialises in lower limb surgery particularly hip and knee arthroplasty and sports injuries. David completed his Surgical Training in London (based primarily at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals) and undertook fellowship training in leading centres in both Australia (Sydney, Perth) and Europe (Switzerland).
Mr Hartwright had a bit of a Fan base whith a lot of freinds and people I know who had had either their Hip or Knees replaced and also a young lady who had her back operated on by Mr Hartwright. I was so pleased when I found out he was my Surgeon for my Left Hip replacement in November 2025. He phoned me about two week before my surgery to explain why and what the surgery was for and the risks involved and also to sign the digital consent form. I was an early admission on the day, arrived at 7.15am, in theatre by 9.30 and home the same day by 7pm. I am now pain free in my hip with full movement, It's just as good as my original hip (used to be). I am now due for surgery to have my left knee replaced again by Mr Hartwright in June 2026 and have complete confidence in him. I also need my right knee replacing in the near future and hope Mr Hartwright will also elect to perform my surgery too so I can look forward to a pain free normal life. Thank you Mr Hartwright

I had both knee replacements done by Mr Hartwright. He was polite and professional at all appointments, clearly explaining what to expect before and after operation during consent phone call. Had RTKR in September 25 and LTKR in December 25. Have recovered well from both ops with good bend and straightness. Exercise info given by physios to do before and after op have been crucial in my recovery. There are also a number of forums on line with lots of useful info and support. Eight weeks post op from left knee I'm able to walk nearly four miles and it's amazing to be able to walk with no pain for the first time in years. Thanks again to Mr Hartwright and the team at Hampshire Orthopaedic Centre.

I was privileged to be under Mr Hartwrights care tor a hip replacement last year. From the initial consultation he was very professional and totally relatable by explaining in detail the procedure and aftercare, thus creating a feeling of total trust. The operation went smoothly with no complications and Mr Hartwright gave a follow up check the same day .A year on I have excellent mobility and was checked again. I honestly cannot imagine better care and outcome and hope that if I need another hip replacement it will be under his care.

Living with hip pain for over 3 years had gradually taken over my life. But from my very first consultation, Mr Hartwright was exceptional. He took the time to listen carefully, explained my diagnosis clearly, and walked me (no pun intended) through the total hip replacement process with patience, honesty and empathy. I felt fully informed and confident in every decision. The surgery itself went extremely smoothly, and the care I received throughout both form him and his colleagues at Sarum Road Hospital was outstanding. Mr Hartwright’s skill, professionalism, and calm reassurance made a daunting experience far less stressful. My recovery has exceeded expectations, and the improvement in my mobility and quality of life has been remarkable. I am deeply grateful for the care I received and would not hesitate to recommend Mr Hartwright to anyone needing hip replacement surgery. An outstanding surgeon and a genuinely compassionate professional.

I cannot praise him and his team enough for their care and dedication and wouldn’t hesitate in recommending him as a surgeon.

The advice to keep my bones as long as possible until the pain had a detrimental impact on my life was good advice. The total knee replacement operation went without problem even though I gad concerns regarding my recent spinal surgery. Here is my advice for people contemplating this procedure: Take the painkillers after the procedure for as long as deemed necessary Expect no real sleep for weeks afterwards. If you don't commit fully to the follow up exercises designed to remove scar tissue, you will not maximise your outcome. I used a tea tray on a soft floor to slide backwards and forwards to improve my range of movement and began walking ever increasing distances to supplement this. Mr H encouraged me to use my bike to increase this range still further This was the key my recovering full flexibility in my new knee. It is important that your physio gets to know your lifestyle to direct you to something suitable that will have the same result. Unfortunately my physio did not do this and it was only thanks to Mr H that I was directed to try this. Do what works for you but remember you only get out of it what you are prepared to put into it. Thanks again Mr H.

I cannot fault the treatment I received from Mr Hartwright and also from his first class team. Right from the initial hip replacement consultation I was impressed by his clarity, honesty and most engaging manner. I felt totally confident going forward for the operation. Thanks to Mr Hartwright's excellent skills the procedure was a resounding success. I am now pain free and mobile. Thank you so much

Had a painful knee for some years and it finally got too painful to endure. I was referred to Mr Hartwright and saw him at out patients where after looking at X rays he recommended a total knee replacement. He explained that it would only get worse and was already in a poor state. He explained what this would entail. I was given a list of exercises to do prior to operation. On the day of operation everything was explained to me and that I could have operation with spinal injection if that was my wish. Operation went really well and I am more than pleased with the result. Saw physios twice since op and given more exercises to do. Saw Mr Hartwright yesterday and discussed the way forward. Excellent surgeon who made everything clear before and after operation. He made me feel confident about procedure and am really pleased with the outcome, Thankyou.
