Review of Ward A6 written by a patient
23rd April 2018

Admitted on 23-03-18 for Right hemithyroidectomy. Pre-op and post-op care was excellent. I was made to feel at ease throughout the whole procedure. The anaesthesiologist came to speak with me before the op to discuss any heart problems I may have as I suffer from SVT and he came to see me after the op to tell me that my heart was fine during the op. I very much appreciated that and the visits from the doctors who attended the op to let me know how it went. Aftercare was excellent and all the staff who attended me in Ward 2 were great. My only concern is that I have not heard from the hospital about the results of the biopsy on the multinodular goitre removed from my neck. I can only assume it was benign, otherwise I am sure they would have contacted me by now.

Review of Ward C23 written by a patient

The midwives and staff were all so helpful, knowledgeable and efficient. They looked after us very well and were so reassuring when we needed it. The quality of care was excellent and they really set us up ready to go home, their advice and help on breastfeeding in particular was invaluable - despite the courses we did this help was what we needed to get comfortable and I am now breastfeeding confidently. I don’t think it would be possible to get better care in a hospital environment.

All staff were very friendly and kind but clearly understaffed on the ward. There were a few points that would make me unsure about recommending Warrington to others I only got consented for the planned c section in theatre so no time to digest information One nurse broke 3 needles trying to take bloods and put items to balance onto my scar whilst taking bloods, I had to ask twice to be careful After trying to go for a shower, the first movement after anaesthesia wore off I was very dizzy and faint, I was provided with a wheelchair and moved to the sink for a wash but then nearly fainted in the chair and couldn't reach the alarm. no one could hear me ask for help, it was through bashing backward and forward luckily I managed to reach an alarm by overstretching. The nurses thought I had been taken back. due to the amount of patients you would have to ask for medication multiple times when coming in and out for observation sometimes the lights were left on and curtains open which as I was unable to move I couldn't turn off or close The staff clearly care about patients and I got great support with breastfeeding amongst other basic needs but the points above made me want to go home a bit earlier than I wanted for better care. It was extremely busy and I feel to do the best job they need more staff on the ward.

The staff on the ward were brilliant. Very supportive and attentive. The staff were always busy with patients and providing care. I was really pleased with the 1-1 support from one of the midwives to begin breast feeding, which I think would not have been achievable without her help. I would definately recommend Warrington hospital. I live in Halton but was recommended from a family member to book to give birth at Warrington and I am so glad I took their advice.

Food was forgotten. Despite constant reminders. Wrong food was then bought even though I am gluten free. Bathroom light stopped working. Was not fixed. Water was difficult to get as again forgotten. Heat was not turned down told could not regulate it. Bin not emptied for days and overflowing despite asking. Bed not changed. Floors not mopped. Couldn’t clean bathroom as light did not work to see. Would rather have stayed in an animal shelter

I have always been seen promptly by midwives, however there is always a long wait for consultant appointments (usually seen 45 minutes after appointment time when appointment only lasts 10 minutes) which can be frustrating given that parking is only free for half an hour. Other than that I think the care is excellent.

I attended the hospital on 3 April 2018 to have a planned Caesarean section of my third child, Sophie. I had some anxieties about this as I had experienced a number of issues during the planned c section of baby number two. I also have Gilbert’s Syndrome which means fasting is difficult. The care I received from the pre-op onwards in particular was absolutely fantastic. I would like to make specific mention to Pauline Naylon who carried out the pre-op review and who after listening to my experience was able to consult her collegues and take a number of steps (such as bringing the date marginally forward) to help manage my anxieties and also my fasting. In addition, she had a warm, supportive experienced disposition which gave me much comfort. She came into theatre with me on the day and held my hand when the spinal was administered. Her colleagues had clearly been very well briefed and the anaesthetist and registrar Nick who conducted the c section were also amazing. They communicated with me fully throughout the surgery and provided much needed reassurance and confidence in the process. I think they should be commended for their approach and treatment of each patient as an individual and the NHS should be proud to have them. I understand that Kate Aldridge has brought a fresh focus on patients with mental health considerations such as anxiety and how important the management of this is. From my perspective her work is fundamentally changing patient experience for the better. I’d also like to say that the other staff on C23 were also very good as was the community service afterwards. I am happy for you to note that the comments came from Rachael Corcoran.
