My husband was admitted to resus via an ambulance .I am his carer and he has 24 hour support . I was shown to a waiting room by a helpful receptionist then left for a few hours without any information on how he was. On admission to Amu the curtain between the beds was splattered with blood . I told the staff member on admission that I was his carer as well as his wife and that he should not have access to any medication. He was transferred to Ward 3 that day and the next day I was allowed to visit early. No nursing staff gave me any information or updates on my husbands condition. I was not happy with the nursing care as he needs prompting to carry out his care needs and on visiting it was apparent he had not had bedding changed despite profuse sweating with a fever .I had advised staff he would not make a fuss or ask for help but would need prompting . On visiting the 2nd day 15 minutes early a staff member was quick to point out I was too early . The pharmacist on the ward was excellent and had also been on a previous stay . She was thorough, professional , informative and approachable . On discharge he was asked to vacate his bed as they were short of beds and put in a corridor with his medication to wait for me to collect him . He was left with all his medication despite me informing staff on admission that due to his mental health condition he should never have access to it .we left the ward with no good byes , nothing . On arriving home I phoned the ward and spoke to the ward Sister with the concern re the medication and it had not been noted on his admission notes .the sister apologised .she offered a call back from one of the Drs as no one had included me in any of his care / treatment whilst an in patient .the sister was able to give me information on his diagnosis so I refused . I am very disappointed with the lack of care my husband was given he had all the medical interventions (for which I am grateful) but as a vulnerable man I felt he was neglected and I also feel that as his carer I was also neglected . As a side note there was a very unwell man on the ward and he appeared to receive a lot of attention and his family did too which was reassuring and good to see . So really what I'msaying is nursing staff please include relatives / carers we are not asking for much time . Please be aware that the patients making the least fuss/ noise may need the most assistance .and I am fully aware of how busy the wards are but a little bit of kindness/ reassurance goes a long way .i didn't say anything whilst my husband was on the ward as on previous admissions I have been ignored whilst waiting at nursing stations to speak to someone and been talked to like I was a nuisance .I previously left a present of biscuits on the nursing station and this wasn't even acknowledged by staff sitting there watching me . I am a registered nurse myself so appreciate the challenges but being on the other side has left me feeling sad and concerned .thanks for reading this epic tale

If you want great care then I would not recommend Royal Bournemouth. The medical care and on occassions nursing care has been poor. My Aunt has rarely seen a doctor and when she has they have failed to listen and so done nothing to improve her state of health or mind. The nurses seem understaffed, if you ask for help, you are told " not now, I'm busy" but that is very distressing when you are elderly, unable to move and urgently need the toilet. And that's providing you get a response, while visiting I have witnessed nurses walking into bays of patients and totally ignoring the bells or worse still, simply switching it off and walking away. The only thing I cannot fault is the cleanliness. I would be loathed to have My Aunt admitted again. This episode has been distressing for her and distressing for the rest of our family.

The culture at this hospital could best be described as unthinking callousness. When admitted for surgery patients attend a general suite where they are left waiting alone. After surgery no named nurse and ward sister does not make themselves known. Having had breast surgery was left feeling abandoned and isolated. Before and after care not great - the clinicians have conversations that do not include patients. Not good that concerns were ignored, then to be told that the condition might still be operable.
