It was obvious I needed to be seen by a doctor, given that I had been referred by a registered nurse. Although I could not be seen on the day I called, I felt an appointment could have been made for the next day. Instead, I had to phone again on the following morning to obtain an appointment. I felt this was an unnecessary waste of my time and the surgery’s resources.

Suggested improvements
You could have made an appointment for me when I telephoned the first time.

I came into the surgery to discuss my appointment and the nurse phoned me back within a few hours of my visit to book me in.

Suggested improvements
There was a slight delay, but not a problem, especially as the nurse and nurse practitioner helped me with another issue for me which I hadn’t even come in for.

I was called by the surgery because Dr Hambleton wanted to see me to review a recent blood test. The face to face appointment was booked. On the day of the appointment I was not at all well but decided that I should keep the appointment. When we arrived the lift was out of order so I requested a downstairs appointment. Dr Hambleton was extremely helpful recognising instantly that I was not right so not only did she explain the blood test results but also dealt with what proved to be a pretty severe chest infection. She went out of her way to ensure that I would be able to collect the prescribed antibiotics before the dispensary closed.

Suggested improvements
The receptionist was obviously tired - it was the end of the day but she was very solemn and did not smile - no eye contact - when I asked for a downstairs consultation she assured me that she would let Dr Hambleton know which she obviously did. Later when I had to make an appointment again no eye contact - simply studying the computer terminal to establish the next free date - so doing her job but not showing any apparent interest in what she was doing or giving me any reassurance. I don’t expect the receptionist to be over friendly but just a bit more than she was showing would have been nice. The receptionist is the first line of contact that people visiting the surgery have and that first impression matters!
