I am pre-diabetic, well Impaired Glucose tolerance as they call it now. I have been taking Metformin for a couple of years now and whilst my sugar levels did not rise they did not fall either but they had been stable for a few years whilst rather high, 6.1. Metformin may have kept them stable but I cannot be sure. When I started exercising very regularly then my sugar levels dropped to 5.8 recently, below pre-diabetic levels. My doctor has advised continued use of Metformin and we are looking at it as a long term view for the rest of my life to help stave off Diabetes Type 2 along with regular exercise.

I was prescribed Metformin to treat Type 2 Diabetes, on the whole the drug worked, however the side-effects can take some getting used-to. The main side-effects were, as with other reviewers, nausea. This can be overcome by taking the dosage with, or after food. The other main side-effect was, initially, a reduced tolerance to alcohol. This lasted for the first couple of months, I'd advise avoiding alcohol all together while taking Metformin.

I was prescribed this having previously used only low dose gliclazide to control my condition (maturity onset diabetes of youth - MODY). When my HbA1C started to climb a little, the doctor suggested I switch to this. Originally the side effects were awful - I felt sick literally constantly, particularly just after taking it. However, taking it just after food lessened this, and I now don't feel sick at all, unless I miss a few days' doses, then it starts to kick in again for a few days. The info with this drug says not to drink on it - probably shouldn't say this but I haven't had any problems, EXCEPT that at first I got a LOT more drunk a LOT more quickly than before! Again, this wears off after a few weeks but it's worth being careful with - the first time it happened I thought my drink had been spiked! Overall though, gives me good control of my condition and once you're through the first few weeks it's really easy to take.
