Metformin has helped control my diabetes, I don't do sugary things, mine is hereditary. I have never suffered any side effects with it at all.

I have being on these since 04 when I was diagnosed with diabetes it has helped me so much that I was told this year if I was to be tested now with how low my blood sugars are now I wouldn't be diagnosed diabetic

If the side effects of Metformin had been manageable, I would have rated this highly as it's easy to use and does not require such regular blood sugar monitoring. However I have experienced extremely bad side effects for months with no impact on blood sugar levels. I have recently been switched to Gliclazide which has brought the blood sugar readings down quickly and is starting to eliminate stomach ache/cramps caused by the metformin.
