I recently had Lens replacement surgery which was carried out by Mr Saj Khan at North Downs Hospital as I had been diagnosed with catarracts. Although I was very nervous about having this done it was something I had wanted for a long time as my eyesight had been deteriorating. I had complete confidence in Mr Khan who explained everything thoroughly and it was a painless procedure. I am delighted to say I have now had lens replacement in both eyes and it has made an amazing difference to my life.

I was referred to Saj Khan as my right eye had very poor vision affected by a significant astigmatism and a scar on the cornea. I was becoming concerned about my ability to drive. Mr Khan recommended I should have a toric lens and the procedure was carried out. The operation went smoothly. These lens need very fine adjustment and can move a little after the procedure, which happened in my case. This was identified very quickly and the adjustment was made. Now after several months the eye has settled down and has improved to the extent that the vision in that eye meets the driving standard. I decided to go ahead with a toric lens in my left eye and my vision is now amazingly good. I feel Saj and the team at North Downs supported me throughout and I'm grateful for their care and attention.

I had been suffering with dry eyes for many years and thought I would just have to accept it and continue with drops and gels on a daily basis. I decided I had to take control of this condition which hundreds of people have. I made an appointment to see Mr Saj Khan at West Valley Hospital Croydon. My experience from the very first appointment reassured me I had made the right decision. Staff were exceptional and Mr Khan examined my eyes thoroughly and set out a treatment plan - something I had never been offered despite the years and tears! of suffering. Mr Khan was professional and knowledgeable in every aspect - not only using medical terms but explaining them in a language I can understand. Thank you.

Profile

Mr Saj Khan is a fellowship trained Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon specializing in cataract, cornea and refractive surgery. Obsessive about quality and safety, he is one of the few ophthalmic surgeons in the UK to have committed to full time independent practice in order to provide the highest standards of care without the distractions and limitations of a typical NHS environment.

After graduating from the United Medical and Dental Schools of Guys and St Thomas’ Hospitals (UMDS), Mr Khan initially underwent general training with a view to becoming a GP before deciding on a career in Ophthalmology.

His basic ophthalmic surgical training was in the South Thames region, including St Thomas’ Hospital, and higher surgical training in the North Thames region, including Great Ormond Street Hospital and Moorfields Eye Hospital.

He then went on to undertake a fellowship (advanced subspecialty expertise) in cataract, cornea and refractive (vision correction) surgery at the world renowned Corneoplastic Unit at the Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead.

After completion of his fellowship, Mr Khan worked as a Consultant at the Corneoplastic Unit from 2008 to 2012 - and again from November 2020 to May 2021 to assist with pandemic backlog.

With over 20 years of ophthalmic experience, Mr Khan always strives to be an early adopter of any new technologies that improve patient safety and outcomes. He was one of the first users of the femtosecond laser (considered to be the most significant advance of the past 20 year) for laser refractive surgery, intracorneal rings and cataract surgery.

As his practice is primarily focused on cataract and premium laser/lens based vision correction surgery, Mr Khan has extensive experience with all types of intraocular lens implants including multifocal, extended depth of focus and toric lenses. He is also experienced in the diagnosis and management of complex corneal problems, including those following refractive surgery.

A strong believer in the importance of continued education to underpin safety, progress and development, Mr Khan is actively involved in the teaching of other ophthalmologists, optometrists, nurses and other healthcare providers, both nationally and internationally.

Having suffered from blepharitis/dry eyes for many years and having undergone laser vision correction himself, Mr Khan has a particular interest in the management of lid margin disease and dry eyes.

As a recognised expert in cataract and lens/laser based vision correction surgery, Mr Khan is a Council member and Treasurer of the United Kingdom and Ireland Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (UKISCRS), a Council member of the British Society of Refractive Surgery (BSRS), a regularly invited contributor at national and international meetings, and a reviewer for ophthalmic journals.

Mr Khan takes the privilege of being trusted with someone’s sight very seriously and will never advise/recommend a procedure he would not perform on his family. He prides himself on providing the best care possible for all his patients, but particularly in facilitating the experience for the nervous/anxious individual.

Mr Khan is fully accredited on the GMC Specialist Register for Ophthalmology and recognized by all Private Medical Insurance (PMI) providers.
