I saw Mr Funk as a private patient. Initial consultation with Mr Funk required an MRI, MRI arthogram and US. With these results he reported that my pec major repair with the NHS had failed at the sternal head portion, and in addition it was likely a low grade infection was present. Treatment suggested was a debridement. When I questioned that this wouldnt improve my function for weightlifting and sport which was the reason i sought treatment,I was told the tendon could be tagged and reattached at another time. As a result i agreed. After the debridement Mr Funk changed his opinion to that there was nothing to be done with the tendon. Three months after the surgery i had persisting pain, muscle cramping and poor function, i contacted the Arm Clinic if there was any treatment options left to me. I was told i would need another set of MRI and US scans before i could have the answer, despite the Arm Clinic already having these and extensive knowledge of my condition. As i was desperate to improve my situation i agreed. After paying for a second set of scans i was promptly told nothing more could be done. It was a shame this couldn't have been told to me without requiring me to buy a second set of scans three months after the first. It was a shame that at the initial consultation i wasn't made aware nothing could be done to improve function before id wasted around 7 thousand pounds to be left in a place no different to when i arrived. I am still unable to participate in weightlifting and sport, in pain and feeling down. He generally has very good reviews which is why i was hopeful, but in my case he was very disinterested.

Response from Mr Lennard Funk

I am very sorry you feel this way. Your initial treatment was to resolve the severe pain you had from complications of your previous surgery. We had many discussions about the risks and benefits of further reconstructive surgery to return you to gym exercises. In view of the previous infection and complexity of reconstruction surgery we decided not to proceed with reconstruction at that time. I did not know that you were this unhappy and since this review I have contacted you and offered to see you and again discuss reconstructive surgery for you, as long as you are aware of the risks and realistic expectations of the surgery. This is not simple and may not give you the level of function you may hope for due to the chronic damage to the tendon. It is my duty to provide you with the safest options that are in your best interest, not simply offer more surgery.

I saw Prof Funk after surgery to my shoulder (by another surgeon) failed completely. The reason for choosing Prof Funk:- my niece is a hospital doctor, and she asked several consultants whom they would prefer to perform the necessary complex operation on themselves .. they ALL recommended Prof Funk. He is pleasant and affable, listens attentively, describes in clear terms the procedures available, discusses each step carefully, and maintains contact throughout the entire process. After the previous surgeon stated that my shoulder was too badly damaged to be repaired, Prof Funk worked his magic and I can now move my arm like a windmill - and I am back in the gym. My physiotherapy was carried out by a locally since I did not wish to travel to Wilmslowfor each session .. when I mentioned that Prof Funk had carried out the surgery she exclaimed "Oh you chose the right guy, he is the best shoulder surgeon in Europe!" I can honestly say that I have complete confidence in Prof Funk, and I have no hesitation in recommending him. If I should ever need shoulder surgery again, at some future date, I shall definitely be visiting Prof Funk.

Fantastic service, immediate diagnosis and recommended treatment. Prof. Funk inspired great confidence and delivered on his promises. As a result I have recommended his practise to a friend and he has already started treatment with the first s two shoulder operations. The results so far have been excellent and meant that he will be able to persue his sports ambitions.

Professor Funk is nothing less than a genius!! After 6 months of shoulder pain following a fall which resulted in a chipped bone, torn tendon, then resulted in a frozen shoulder, a quick scan then recommended, Hydrodilatation there and then. Immediate relief after the procedure, and almost full movement. Don’t think about it, just go and see this guy!!
