My sleep patterns have been causing me issues now for 2 years, since I was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer. I am not medically trained, but my sleep became severely impacted when I commenced the daily medication. I then found that I was enjoying the normal sleep patterns and consulted my GP. He put me on various sleep assist medications , but to no real result. I am grateful to my GP for getting a referel to the Sleep Unit at UCLH under the NHS, as because of both the Cancer and Insomnia, I was not reliable in the workplace. I had a 45 minute consultation with Dr R. Shah and it was most benificial , and he offered me a combination of modified sleeping prescriptions and possibly more importantly, a longer term therapy through an REM and CBT process, and I look forward to commencing them all. Thank you very much DR Rajiv Shah. I hope that this will get my life back on track, as it is not exactly a bundle of fun currently! Best wishes, Richard.

Dr Shah is an extremely knowledgable and conscientious Psychiatrist. His practice methods are clearly evidence-based, which brought me great comfort, and he listens and applies techniques specific to the issue at hand and wider context of my life. I felt at ease fairly quickly and, having started therapy with Rajiv almost a year ago as a rather cynical and skeptic patient who tried many therapists prior, I was soon able to trust that our work together would yield positive progress.

Dr Shah was very understanding of my specific problems, it was incredibly reassuring and I felt listened to and understood at all times. He created a very safe environment, he was non-judgemental, calm and professional at all times. He had an excellent approach to each session outlining goals for the hour/ week ahead and I focused on those which helped me significantly. I would certainly recommend Dr Shah and his methods.

I have been suffering from OCD in some form or another for decades, if not my whole life. It is a difficult disorder to handle, and I honestly just assumed there isn't much constructive things that could be done. Rajiv's technique, to my very pleasant surprise, proved to be very effective - we focused on tangible exercises that really helped my everyday life and general calmness of my mind. I found myself been much more capable to handle the intrusive thoughts and urge to do rituals than before, and can confidently say that those sessions improved my life quality significantly. Thank you, Rajiv!

Profile

Rajiv Shah is a Consultant Psychiatrist who specialises in both general adult psychiatry and medical psychotherapy (less than 1% of UK psychiatrists hold both) and is accredited with the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapists (BABCP).

Having completed a Master’s in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy at Oxford University, he is especially interested in the art and science of promoting learning from our personal experiences, through the integration of CBT interventions into his medical practice.

He has extensive experience in OCD and its related disorders, having worked in the National inpatient Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) Service at St George’s Mental Health Trust and leaders in CBT and OCD in the NHS and private practice.

He is interested in the field of lifestyle psychiatry and advocates for balancing the transformative potential of optimising sleep, exercise and diet with the nourishing activities of mindfulness, nature connectedness and social connectedness. Using Socratic enquiry with his patients, he aims to promote critical thinking and encourages self-awareness of unhelpful coping strategies and empower them with the knowledge and skills to promote their mental health and wellbeing.

He has integrated his experience of working within these different therapeutic models and combined these holistic tools and techniques into a novel approach that conceptualises the journey to self-discovery for both patients and colleagues as seeking WARMTH; Wisdom (self-knowledge) , Acceptance (self-acceptance) , Resilience (self-empowerment) , Magnanimity (self-forgiveness) , Transformation (self- development) and valuing Hermeneutics (self-reflection).
Through his website www.drrajivshah.co.uk , he promotes positive messages of hope, with videos and adapted CBT resources that encourage critical self-reflection.
