I had a pacemaker implanted over 17 years ago and since then I have had three replacements. Over the time I have had problems with the leads and have had two of them replaced without removal. My last but one replacement was in October 2024 and I experienced a lot of swelling and soreness around the site. In January 2025 I began to feel unwell with loss of weight, skeletal pains in the back and chest, night sweats and extreme and uncontrollable cold shivers. Eventually I was diagnosed with endocarditis and spent 7 weeks in hospital on intravenous antibiotics. Unfortunately the infection was on the pacemaker leads and the antibiotics could not remove the bacteria. The hospital had been reluctant at first to remove the pacemaker, there were 4 leads and since the leads had been present for many years they would be incredibly difficult to remove without damaging my veins. In the event this could lead to serious complications and possible death, but there was no other option. I was referred from Salford to Wythenshawe for the procedure under the care of Dr Skene. Fortunately I had found a 'Miracle Worker' who successfully completed the operation without any complications whatsoever, and then in the course of time implanted a new permanent pacemaker and leads. I am now relatively healthy with no after effects from my treatment and I will always be grateful to Dr Skene for agreeing to take on the task of replacing my pacemaker and leads, and then doing so successfully. I must admit I was very worried and concerned prior to my treatment but I needn't have been because I was in the hands of a brilliant, dedicated and experienced surgeon.
Thank you Dr Skene

Such a good listener, and explained treatment in a way that was understandable. He has a very relaxed way with him. Really put me at ease. I don't think he could possibly do more, just an excellent Doctor who I would highly recommend.
Dr.Skene is truly an outstanding, highly skilled, and gifted Doctor, this was the third time over the last five years that I have required ablation for chronic Atrial fibrillation (AFib)
From my point of view having sections of my heart ablated (removed or destroyed) is very scary, however, with the ever-smiling softly spoken confidence that is Dr Skene's reassuring manner you know you are in the safest of hands.
He and his amazing team of technicians and nurses work in Wythenshawe Hospital's ultra-modern Cath Lab using the latest A.I Heart mapping to carry out the most complex and dangerous procedures.
The op took about 2 hours, there was a lot of work needed and it was very successful.
I am truly grateful for this exceptional man and his team, he has saved my life for the third time, if you need an ablation, there is no better team or place to trust with your life
warmest regards
Adrian

I was referred to Dr Skene by my previous consultant who admitted he had run out of ideas. Dr Skene went down a totally different route of anti arrhymic drugs and basically fixed the problem. Changed my life. Admittedly I'm drug reliant, but at least I don't spend half my life in VT in the E&A department. Bloke is a genius as far as I'm concerned.
Dr Skene was involved with fitting a replacement pacemaker a couple of years ago, when this didn't work as it should have done he spent a lot of time and effort in adjusting it,finally performing a new experimental operation which had only been performed about four times previously in this area which I think was called a trans septal bypass. The results were immediate and very successful. I was very impressed by his care and dedication. I would highly recommend him.
