Due to a discrepancy in my treatment file there was too much upset to continue my rTMS that week. A review was done with the consultant who apparently said to continue my treatment. It was not made clear in the notes as to whether that was to continue with both types of treatment (RHS & LHS) or to follow my original treatment plan which was 10 + 20. I had finished my course of 10 the previous Friday. They also said they needed to check "the review booklet". That info needs to be added into my care plan.

Response from Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS)

I am disappointed and sorry that we did not provide a smooth treatment plan we have worked hard since we opened to improve the way we deliver treatments and ensure that our TMS technicians of fully appraised of the treatment plan and protocol to be used. Since your experience, we have introduced and electronic component to our clinical system which allows the TMS consultant to prescribe treatments and to document care plans in order to improve communication among all of our staff providing treatment.

Staff are very good, positive patient and friendly. The rTMS sessions are long and the magnet is heavy and uncomfortable and the treatment programme is long and intense and needs travelling into hospital. It would be better if the technology develops to make the treatment less intensive.

Thank you for your comment, as you say the magnet is heavy and can be uncomfortable although we do our best to put you in the most comfortable position. We have a new magnetic coil with a police system to reduce the feeling of heaviness from the coil. We are now using a newer version of rTMS called theta burst, this is much faster but equally as effective as the 40 minute treatment but only takes 3 minutes.

The following points are relevant a)The service is lead by an enthusiast, Dr Alex O'Neill-Kerr who runs this service in addition to his responsibility as Medical Director of the Trust. b)The unit has acquired a great deal of experience and is probably preminate in having a national; status and a lead position. c) The team have good nursing leadership and very caring staff, who care for the well being of the patient in the widest sense. I understand that improvements are planned for the layout of the department - or replacement, as the present arrangements compromise patient privacy. It is always a pleasure to visit the Hospital although a long distance from our home. My wife was admitted to the John Radcliffe Hospital Oxford wit a urine infection earlier this year where surprisingly there was complete ignorance in the Neuroscience Department of RTMS. Why does this not figure in doctors training? Peter Tankard
