Even though you could see the nurses were busy, even when you pressed your button for attention I was never made to feel I was been a pain or nuisance. All the staff were happy and chatty, which in turn made me feel better.

The nurses actually care about everyone. They know you're in pain and they're so sympathetic and kind. Very unlike other wards where your treated as a number. I am the first to understand Doctors don't have the time but doctors in SAU ward. Most doctors made the time to talk to you and made you understand what's going on. The only problem I had was waking up after I'd had my operation not even 15 hours before, being in intense pain - not being able to walk to even take myself to the toilet and then being told I was free to go home that night - I cried because they told me whilst Id still been very ill and in so much pain and even though they said I could stay - I still felt as though Id been given my marching orders and I was not welcome: I wouldve much prefered to be asked my own opinions later in the day rather than minutes after id woken up and still delusional after medication.

First thing that hits you is the vile smell of cigarette smoke and the sight of people smoking all over the place by the entrances. This is despite there being huge signs saying no smoking. They need to police it and make people put out their cigarettes. Nurses and even Doctors also smoke outside and nurses in uniform sit outside on the road on little stools, with their flasks and lunch and cigarettes hanging out of their mouths. They litter the place with wrappers and cigarette stumps. Who wants to be treated by someone who goes back on the wards stinking like a human ashtray??? The Maelor hospital needs to sort this out and pronto.

Disgusting that all the entrances in and out of the hospital are clogged up by smoking patients and their relatives. Pregnant women, people on drips and people with oxygen tubes up their noses, all smoking! To make matters worse nurses and other hospital staff all sit outside on the road by the hospital smoking during their breaks, it looks terrible! Public benches are littered with cigarette stubs and the same stubs are all over the floors by the entrances. Children seeing nurses smoke get the wrong message and think its okay to smoke!

Worst thing about the Maelor hospital in Wrexham is all the smoking outside by staff and patients!

Very poor whilst an inpatient in 2008 on the surgical side. ACU was acceptable but marred by the use of mixed wards. Recent use of casualty department suggests that it is dire need of a major review. At night before Xmas 2013 it was very understaffed. on Monday 16th June 2014 it could only be described as a shambles. I left and received treatment at the Countess of Chester.
