My mother was in ward 8 for just over two weeks and I have nothing but praise and admiration for all the staff who were responsible for her care. People say angels have wings but I beg to differ as the staff in St Johns are testament to that. They went above and beyond with their caring and professional approach to not only my mother but all the patients in this ward. I would like to mention a few of the staff who nursed my mum during the last few weeks of her life and in particular say a huge thank you to Joanne, Kelly, Caroline, Sarah, Demi and Emily. I apologise for not naming all the staff members as there were so many working different shift patterns.
The caring ethos in ward 8 was very evident as they dealt with numerous medical conditions on a daily basis.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking care of my wee mum until she passed.
I would like to thank all staff at Endoscopy St Johns Howden for looking after me today, your care and kindness went far and above. From booking in, nurses struggling to find a vien to put Canula in, apologies, I don't give blood easily, but we got there in the end. For the staff guiding me through both procedures I was getting done, to the aftercare in recovery. Thank you so very much for making me feel safe, and explaining to me everything that I got done today. You guys are professionals in every aspect! Thank you again
I would like to use this forum to thank all the staff involved who cared for a loved one in Ward 21. The treatment he received was second to none and the kindness shown to him was phenomenal. As a family we are extremely grateful for the care and attention he received during his 6 weeks stay prior to his death.
After being flown down from Wick with a severed thumb I was lucky enough to be in the care of the most awesome people I have ever met in my life. The professionalism hard work and dedication to patient care is second to none in St Johns Ward 18.
It would be unfair of me to single out any nurses who helped (not withstanding the surgeons who re-attached thumb in first place!) but I am forever indebted and grateful to you all including all domestic , cleaners, porters, food prep and of course our friends Helen & Nigel :)
I would however like to personally thank one (no names but it's you!) who patiently checked my thumb throughout the night and nights with her phone flashlight amongst her many other jobs.
She kept it warm and basically saved it, It's a debt I can never repay although I will update by letter to Ward 18 and make a donation in due course.
Also I made a promise to her ( an aww shucks moment) about smoking and drinking lifestyle and I have kept my promise to her so far and shall continue to do so. So she and many others helped in all areas to ensure long term health and giving the injury the best chance to heal because they all care so much (it's a natural to them). Here's hoping the pictures are in "thumb monthly magazine soon").
Also the nurses who helped me with some sleeping or lack of issues (I think we all know what was causing that, thiamine helps) and happy to report no nightmares now :) phew.
So not only did the nurses fix my thumb they fixed my whole life and gave me a future! They work so so hard yet every one of them can still smile and be gentle, caring and compassionate. They are truly Angels!
Just had my stitches out yesterday in Inverness and all looking good so far so I'm chuffed, be back to work in due course just takes time and a lot of Physio they say.
If your going to St Johns don't worry your with the very best. Above all please be kind to the staff and show them the respect they all deserve in such a hard job and I can assure you it is most certainly reciprocated by them all.
I'll never forget you all in Ward 18 much love and respect from a humbled dangerous gardener!
Thank you, thank you all so much xxx.
I was seen in ward 20 for a carpal tunnel operation on 4th June. I was treated with empathy, kindness and given any information that was required and had answers to all my questions. The staff were so pleasant and had an ability to give reassurance to me that I was in safe hands. No request was ignored. Yes I had to wait a good long time for the operation but I had been informed of this. Meanwhile they had a canteen that was superb in every way and my son and I had a great lunch. The surgeon, Mr Paul Stirling took the time to intorduce himself to both myself and my son and prewarned us of the wait. The operation went well again with kindness (and sense of humour)being shown to me. In the end and considering the bad press re NHS I think the care and attention that I experienced at St John`s hospital was superb and no doubt will help towards healing. Thank you. Myrtle Turner
Although my appointment was scheduled for 8.30am the department did not open till that time. It was OPD1 eye department. I was seen at 9.15am and everyone I dealt with apologised for the delay. Everyone who interacted with me were very professional and friendly and were attentive and explained the how and why of the procedures. Special mention for Dr. Seshadri who explained everything in a manner I could understand
Just today 21st April 2023 I was admitted to the Day Of Surgery department to have a growth removed from my arm under local anaesthetic. I have have to say that every single staff member within the Day of Surgery department were superb. I cant praise them enough for the way I was looked after for the time I was there. I would like to say a big thankyou to you all.

My mother, who s 82 years was referred to St Johns hospital with a bump to the head, she had fallen over in the bathroom. Her scalp was cut and required some stiches and she also has the underlying condition of Alzheimer's. She stayed overnight in the hospital after being driven there by an ambulance. I visited her and she was no different to how I know her. My dad had also accompanied her in his own car behind the ambulance. He told the doctor on arrival at the hospital that she suffers from Alzheimer's. She was kept in the medical assessment unit - MAU for 4 days which was unnecessarily long. She was then transferred to ward 9 and put in a side room where she stayed a further three nights. I asked the nurse why she had been put in this room. The nurse replied because she has had a head injury. My father came into visit one day and found a packet of sandwiches at the foot of the bed, he enquired about them and the nurse told him that is my mums' dinner. She could not open the packet! He came in one day at 11.30 am and she was still in bed.
I visited on a Sunday at noon and she was still in bed! The doctor had failed to note that my mother has Alzheimers on admittance. This condition contributes towards my mothers failure to cope with everyday activities. The failure of the simple procedure of recording a patients past medical history on admittance at the accident and emergency is atrocious. The doctor had contributed all my mothers problems to the head injury when it was caused by her altzheimers all along! My mum is now recovering from the stress of being in St Johns hospital.
Took to hospital in an ambulance with a severe head injury left in a freezing cold waiting room for over 3 hours for triage then sent home had to return to a&e another twice got seen by a doctor after getting a bed then get put back into the waiting room or left in a corridor watch nurses and doctors on there phones in groups and giggling apparently not doing any work both times to be sent home ok when I’m still in severe pain and vomiting not how health care professionals should be treating there patients
As an ex nurse I was particularly anxious about my intented operation(knowledge isn't always a good thing) In addition to the proposed surgery I have back and knee problems and am overweight. I discussed my concerns with theatre staff re them possibly injuring my long term health problem s whilst under anaesthetic . The nurses and Dr's listened and obliged to my requests. Theatre recovery staff and day surgery staff were excellent. Kind and on top of pain management. The ward was clean and the food was good. Thankyou very much to all those who work hard to help make their patients stay a positive one. I appreciate you all.
