My mother, who s 82 years was referred to St Johns hospital with a bump to the head, she had fallen over in the bathroom. Her scalp was cut and required some stiches and she also has the underlying condition of Alzheimer's. She stayed overnight in the hospital after being driven there by an ambulance. I visited her and she was no different to how I know her. My dad had also accompanied her in his own car behind the ambulance. He told the doctor on arrival at the hospital that she suffers from Alzheimer's. She was kept in the medical assessment unit - MAU for 4 days which was unnecessarily long. She was then transferred to ward 9 and put in a side room where she stayed a further three nights. I asked the nurse why she had been put in this room. The nurse replied because she has had a head injury. My father came into visit one day and found a packet of sandwiches at the foot of the bed, he enquired about them and the nurse told him that is my mums' dinner. She could not open the packet! He came in one day at 11.30 am and she was still in bed. I visited on a Sunday at noon and she was still in bed! The doctor had failed to note that my mother has Alzheimers on admittance. This condition contributes towards my mothers failure to cope with everyday activities. The failure of the simple procedure of recording a patients past medical history on admittance at the accident and emergency is atrocious. The doctor had contributed all my mothers problems to the head injury when it was caused by her altzheimers all along! My mum is now recovering from the stress of being in St Johns hospital.
