Review of Queen’s - Accident & Emergency
8th August 2023

I arrived at queens in an ambulance in excruciating pain my 3 year old son was present with me which I get is not ideal but it was an emergency hence why the ambulance was called I was given gas and air for the pain, I can’t remember much as the pain and medication they gave me had me pretty much knocked out but I do remember the lady in charge of a&e was shouting and me and my autistic son, I was trying to explain his condition but she rolled her eyes and told someone to get him out of here my sister was on here way she couldn’t get there any faster with I was also trying to explain, I was left in a&e on a chair in agony for 13hours I was giving pain meds when I first came in and didn’t receive any more or any communication from a doctor as to what was going on, I then moved to a different room 14/15 hours later, which again I was left and told to be quiet and the door was shut on me until my mother had arrived and complained to the staff, after the meds had worn off and the pain was back I was still left by myself with my drip leaking out my arm for 2hours so I was getting no fluids and was very dehydrated I was then moved to another ward with I was left again for another hour with my drip leaking all over me and the bed I had a anxiety attack due to the pain and being left alone for all them hours the nurses on this ward did actually help me, I was then woke up at 6:20 and was move up to sky ward A and was a plus1 in a room next to a toilet for over 10 hours to be then told I can go home with obviously I refused to go as I still had no clue what was happening and I was still in so much pain a number of nurses on that ward told me to tell the doctor they shouldn’t send me home in this pain I soon got a bed space where they kept my pain under control i was still in pain once the medicine wore off in the morning the doctor told me I was being discharged with automatically I had another anxiety Attack with I was told I was being aggressive when I couldn’t even breathe properly I then had the sister in charge JAMIE SKY WARD A who was very intimidating to me she was threatening me with security with obviously scared me even more there was no consideration for what I had just been through the last 5 days the pain I was currently in, I was given a tablet with I think was codeine after an hour off panic and anxiety attacks I was told I would be sent home with paracetamol which I knew would not even touch the pain I’m in right now, I was again threatened to be picked up and moved by the sister in charge JAMIE then she proceeded to again threaten me with security at this point I was just drained I was literally having heart palpitations my mum advised me to just leave so I took my discharge letter and walked home I was also given a laxative tablet and was literally going to the toilet as I was walking, this was the most traumatic experience I have ever been through in my life

The A&E department is not fit for purpose. It is far too small and under staffed to cope with the amount of people who are using the service. This is not the fault of the medical staff who were, on the whole, fantastic but a symptom of a bigger issue. This does however, create a knock on effect for patients. My overall time spent in A&E was 15hrs and it felt like I was in a makeshift field hospital from a war zone. I had to ask for pain relief, i was not offered it, and when I was prescribed something I was still waiting for it after 45-50mins. I approached the Nurses station to ask if I could have what had been prescribed and was told ‘we’ll get around to it’. I was in tears with my pain and had to beg to get the pain relief I was prescribed which I eventually received another 20 minutes later. I would like to single out Dr Reddy and another consultant called Cristina who were faultless in the care and kindness they showed me. I found it unprofessional when LAS crews and Nurses were arguing and calling each other liars in front of patients. Any issues between staff should be dealt with out of sight and hearing of patients.

A and E was very busy and staff all seemed to be working hard, however, I spent over 15 hours there, I had a blood test, urine test and CT scan. I had to ask for updates as I was just siting around for hours with no information. I was told by another patient when I eventually went down to the CT scan that one of the machines was broken. This was clearly causing delays but no one mentioned this to me. Lack of communication can cause distress and upset. I feel that this could be improved. It was nice to be offered sufficient food and drinks during my visit. I had sandwiches and biscuits but hot food was also available.

Suggested improvements
Communication is key. People will be more patient if they are made aware of significant issues that will cause delays. The plastic chairs are so uncomfortable, it’s very hard for someone in pain to sit in these chairs for many many hours. I have a number of crohnic health issues and found the chairs extremely uncomfortable. Cushions may help mitigate this or perhaps the government can provide more funding to pay for decent chairs.

I was left struggling with breathing for seven hours in a waiting room while they waited for blood test results and X-ray results. When I finally pushed them to sort this out they admitted my notes had been overlooked. I was also told I needed a second ecg but there was nobody there to perform it and I’d be set an appointment for it and a referral to respiratory clinic. 8 days later and I’ve heard nothing. Not satisfactory.

Suggested improvements
Taken proper care of patients, it was chaos.

I was blue lighted to queens after being discharge Saturday from king George hospital for knee replacement where in japonica ward I received outstanding care. In queens totally different experience. II was ignored left without any means of taking myself to toilet as my crutches were lost I waited 5 hrs for a commode, 1 cup of water in 7 hrs, was bleeding from my stomach from clexane injections. I asked for water to wash myself and not offered a gown despite my dress covered in blood. I was left begging for pain relief telling me I was not written up any yet in resus I was given morphine straight into a cannular doctor told me he had written me up for meds a nurse argued I had 10ml but I would have known if I had oralmorph. I worked in care for years so know how things r run. They said 16hrs delay in A & E very busy people on stretchers in corridor but I witnessed them laughing joking about weekend where they had been and got upto. I went from excellent care in Rhesus and transfer to hospital paramedics and then moved to rafting it was terrible I called out for nurse help constantly kept saying 5 mins then hours passed. I then got moved in morning to medical A that was just as bad. In tge night was sent fir CT scan with dye my cannulae line was not flushed so niw have a huge bruise and blue dye showing. I’m traumatised from what happened never again will never go queens few weeks before my friend diabetic type 1 almost lost her foot had a nasty foot infection they was saying very busy she eventually told may need to amputate her foot then 3am in morning said she can go home no infection so she did only to be called at 8 am saying needs to get bk to hospital for 9.30am after hardly any sleep. She called cab got bk to be told dont know who called u it then took hours to be seen and dressings to be done. She is now at clinic every week since as not healing. Another of my clients was left hours no help dehydration. No food or drink the whole time when food or drinks came round she was off having tests. My son also was told to go walk-in to have hand stitched by a triage nurse at queens as huge delays. He went walk in only to be told to go bk to queens as needs a tetanus. He then waited 9 hrs to be stitched up. The difference in treatment at king George and queens is miles apart. I was eventually given a ward but told by doctors I can go home with antibiotics and ambulatory care I jumped at that and have had excellent care since from cope team

Because I was well looked after at a very stressful time, the staff went above and beyond to keep me informed and to relieve any stress that I was experiencing. Dr.Davi?was fantastic and I thank her (spelling of name?)regarding white coat syndrome and how she understood.
