Having been treated privately for many years, I recently found myself using the NHS for an operation by Arun Majumdar and was totally impressed with the facilities at the L&D hospital - the ward/facilities and staff were equally as impressive as private facilities I have used with the exception of the huge scale of this building and the walk to surgery feeling a little like you were in your gown on a busy high street, that aside I am now very happy to use NHS facilities should the need arise, even the lack of private room did not make this visit unpleasant as I was a day case, where I arrived very early and left very late with no overnight stay - I am not sure I would feel the same about shared facilities for an overnight or longer stay. However, overall my experience was a pleasant one.

My experience at the hospital went well. From the preparation for the procedure to the aftercare was a plus.

I cannot praise the staff on ward 23 highly enough when I was admitted recently with a broken femur. They were all friendly, compassionate and would attend to all your needs as quickly and efficiently as possible, given the needs of the other patients. They are worth their weight in gold. I would also like to praise very highly the Upper GI Clinical Nurse specialists, Wendy Shearsmith and Heather Simpson. They are the most caring, sympathetic and helpful people you could wish for at traumatic times when the diagnosis is extremely distressing. They are at the end of the phone whenever you need to talk or need advice. You cannot ask for better.

I was seen as an outpatient and operated on within 8 weeks. All the staff I met were attentive and caring and introduced themselves appropriately. The two people who let them down were the receptionists, in the the oral surgery dept and x-ray. Is it so difficult to look up, smile and acknowledge someone when they come to the desk? Even if you are in the middle of some paperwork a nod would suffice - it's really just common courtesy.

From calling 999 when my husband had a massive bleed out his ear following surgery four days previously (at a different hospital), the staff have been amazing. The lady on the call, the paramedics that came to our house, the care in A&E, the care in ITU, the care in HDU and last but not least, Ward 22, everyone was absolutely wonderful, professional and caring. You were all a credit to yourselves and the NHS. Thank You!

I am the relative of a patient who was recently admitted to L&D as an emergency. It took many hours to reach someone by phone who could provide information about my relative. When I was able to get through to a member of staff (the nursing team) they were quite angry in repeatedly telling me about the bad language used by my relative. I tried to explain that this could not be helped as he has severe dementia, and it is a symptom of his disease. They did not seem sympathetic to the situation. I do not feel they understood that it was something he could not control. I understand that there are significant pressures on the ward, and everyone is working very hard, but I really did encounter an unprofessional attitude to the situation. Numerous investigations were ordered without explanation and we as a family did not feel kept in the loop about any of this, despite numerous requests that we would like to be kept informed. The medical care itself was good, although sadly let down by communication.
