Review of A&E
11th March 2013

Seen fairly quickly by a nurse practitioner, who then sent me for x-ray. Waiting for x-ray for approximately 20 minutes then received results almost immediately. Everybody was very friendly and helpful. Considering how busy the ward was I was very impressed by how quickly I was in and out (within approx. 2 hours)

arrived at aau from accident and emergency a brain scan was done almost immediately we where taken into the day room and had to wait 6hours and 20 min approximately despite being informed by a nurse that a doctor was for her working in the area this was before 5pm at 10 past 11 pm a doctor arrived who said he was sorry for our wait he was from a fresh shift after a further examination we waited to see another doctor who gave another examination we finally left the hospital at 20 to 1 am along with us where other patients who also had been waiting for hours and hours we all agreed third world care and the total lack of information was horrendous one old lady was repeatedly told transport was arranged for her hours later she was told it was not arriving and because it was now midnight a bed was ready and she can stay the night iwas told by another patient she had been sitting in the same wheel chair since 12am dinner time the announce ment that she had a place to sleep was greeted with sarcastic clapping the nurses as usual where great lack of a doctor and total lack of up tt date information was a big let down to us all .also the staff nurse in a and e said she called us two or three times as the main area was completely full we sat with other patients in the small arrival area where we never heard our name called i even approached the arrival desk to ask how much longer do we have to wait as we had waited over an hour and was informed by her we had to wait three hour minimum to see a doctor even for a suspected stroke we heard our name called and the staff nurse was brilliant and organised a stroke team to come quickly to examine my wife after they had seen her we still had to wait over another hour before a doctor examined her and moved her onto aau is there a better system for calling patients in a and e asthe present one seems out dated thank you

L got sent from an out of hours doctors surgery to a&e with a letter specifically to put me on a drip. They got me all prepared and put it in my arm and told my dad that somene will be down for me and i will be in 24 - 48 hours so my dad went to work and had agreed to come back at 5pm. (This was at 6.30am) after being sat around waiting for ages another doftor came in and then decided not to keep me in and to discharge me and that he would write me a prescription for tablets - the reason i needed the drip was because i could not eat/drink or take tablets?! To which i explained (painfully) to him! Once discharged i was sat for a long time in this same department crying in front of everyone as i had no way of getting home. I had no keys, my dad was at work and i could not contact him (he was told by the doctor i would be in a lot longer so never needed to leave me any money or keys etc), i had no money for a taxi and even if i did i had no keys to get into the house. They told me to get my prescription - ishich i repeated i had no money to get this so i left in if anythng a worse mess than when i got there. Noone once offered me any help regarding me getting home. Worst service i have ever witnessed in my life, id be ashamed if i was them, how would they feel if theyre daughter was left in the state she was. The a&e ward are mist definitely useless and i am disgusted. I am now at home after my dad picking me up from a friends. After next to no sleep in 4 nights, no food & no drink its safe to say i needed theyre help.

I can't remember which ward I was on but I had an op on a broken and cancerous vertebrae. I went in on Thursday 24 January, had the op on Friday 25 and came home on Saturday 26 January. The surgeon was wonderful, efficient and very pragmatic. I wanted, and felt able to go home, and he said why not? I was so impressed with he - was his name Elliot? My first impressions of Hull hospital were dire! It was like a dirty and dangerous building site. Once in the foyer one of the lifts didn't work and there were crowds of people waiting for the the three remaining lifts. My heart sank. I really didn't want to put myself into the care of this place, I felt really down. But once on the ward everyone seemed ok, quite friendly - I've been in better wards in many different hospitals but I've also been in worse. The shining light was the operation and the difference it has made to my life! Also, the food was not too bad! I was used to the terrible food at York hospital and even at the wonderful Royal Orthopaedic hospital in Birmingham, where it is in edible!

Review of A&E

While the doctor who treated my grandmother was lovely, highly respectful of her dignity and gave us the impression of being a highly competent individual (Dr Phillip O Donnel) being treated iin an area where other patients food adorns a chair, a used glove is on the floor and a swab with blood on does not make you want to visit again. Indeed, the waiting room in the majors section of A and E is just about big enough for four people to sit down, beds of very Ill looking people clutter the corridors and when I got lost and asked the way in the crammed minors section the receptionist was abrupt, signage was rubbish and the whole place felt unclean. add to that the use of AAU to stick a 92 year old in and the 8 hour wait for patient transport to Castle Hill and I feel angry that the professionals who clearly can deliver excellent service are unable to because of a system which does not work.
