My husband received compassionate and caring support

Suggested improvements
My husband received great care but was only at home a week before he passed away on March 9th so I was a little surprised to receive this feedback request.

Response from Cynthia Spencer Hospice

I would like to apologise for any distress caused, this was not our intention. Hospice at Home due to the very nature of its service does not like to ask for feedback from relatives when patients are imminently dying. We attempt to find a balance between asking for feedback and the appropriate timing of that feedback. We acknowledge that on this occasion the timing was insensitive.

Response from Cynthia Spencer Hospice

Thank you for your kind words. The hospice have a policy of leaving it six months before asking for feedback so I am really sorry if this caused you any upset. Best wishes, Hugh Jones, Patient Experience Manager.

As a carer for the patients, my husband, I saw it Marie Curie nurses over a period of 4/5 days - my husband deteriorated very rapidly - one nurse came 3 times and t was her that I felt more comfortable with in looking after my husband and giving me support.

Suggested improvements
The one thing that needs to be addressed either with yourselves or GPs is that we were not told that as my husband initially wanted to be resuscitated. Hospice at some not 'kick in'. We struggled 48 hours with no palliative nurse or [name removed] nurse and felt abandoned. No one informed us of this until last 4 days o his life.

Response from Cynthia Spencer Hospice

Thank you for your feedback and I am sorry that the experience was not as positive as it should have been. Hospice at Home is commissioned to provide support for patients wishing to die at home, there is no restriction in their referral criteria for seeing patients who still wish to be considered for resuscitation. It is through Hospice at Home visiting that sometimes these sensitive conversations can be had and patients may choose to change their mind or they may wish to continue to be considered for active resuscitation. It is unclear as to whether it was the team or the GP who used the term that Hospice at Home would not ’kick in’, we will continue to work with our GP colleagues in ensuring they are updated on the Hospice at Home referral criteria.
