For the last two years my mum has been in terrible pain and housebound due to having severe Spinal Stenosis. She met Mr Christopher Derham, who was truthful, understanding and professional towards my mums predicament, as she was worried about having surgery at the age of 80, with other health ailments and a husband living with Dementia, but took the decision to have the Decompression surgery on the 17th November 2022. On the day of the surgery Mr Derham's team were impeccable, everyone was attentive and understanding, doctor named 'Mo' checked everything. As my mum was going to theatre Mr Derham came up to me and said 'it will be ok', this was so unexpected and so rewarding, that even being as busy as he was, that he took the time to reassure us. The surgery went according to plan, Mr Derham saw my mum when she was on the ward the following day, she stated she was not experiencing excruciating pain and it was like a miracle, to which Mr Derham gave her the 'thumbs up' and made my mums day! She is now recoving well and wishes she had had the surgery earlier. As a family, we want to thank everyone at the LGI, prior, during and after the surgery for everything they did and do on a daily basis, especially Mr Derham, who is highly respected by those he works with. I had a meningioma removed on 28 April. I saw Chris Derham and his team twice before that date, and he and his team came around the morning of the 28th. He had such an air of confidence in himself and his team that that reassured me more than anything. A few days after the operation, he tried to ring me twice, but my phone wasn't working (unknown to me). He rang my nominated person, who rang me and I rang him, and all was fine, it was just a standard, for him, follow up. I so appreciated this, from such a busy man. I have seen him once since the operation, which was fine, and I have a specialist nurse who I can ring any time. I cannot adequately express how grateful I am to Chris and his team for taking away the fear of such major surgery, which he mainly did by his professionalism and by his manner throughout. Thank you, Chris, and your team - I do believe that good people attract good people to them, and after the way I was treated by Chris and everyone involved in my treatment, I believe this even more strongly.

I had emergency decompression surgery in December and saw him again after 8 weeks of surgery. I had a private consultation with another spine surgeon and was quite terrified about the surgery and outcome. I came to lgi the following day and was taken care by dr Dereham and his team. I was assessed , and operated within 8 hours on a Saturday night! I felt relaxed and confident in the manner dr Dereham dealt with me. He gave me hope and confidence and thankfully my surgery went well and I have recovered well. Even today he gave me re assurance and made me feel relaxed again. Can’t thank him and his spinal specialist nursing team who are so approachable and very very helpful. He is genuinely a very nice and down to earth person and a very very compitant doctor. Mr Derham is a very experienced and fantastic neurosurgeon. He is caring, compassionate and puts the patient at the centre of care. He makes decisions taking everything into consideration. He knows when to operate and when not to, a skill not many surgeons possess. I would whole heartedly recommend him to anyone including my family members. I am grateful for the care he provided to me. I recently underwent a revision decompression and discectomy at L4/L5 with Mr Derham. He was recommended to me by another surgeon which in itself speaks volumes. An obviously very skilled surgeon but also a genuinely lovely, down to earth man. From my first consultation I felt reassured by his calm, confident manner. I was up and walking 2 hours after surgery and discharged in under 24 hrs thanks to the incredible care I received from Mr Derham and his team at the Nuffield. My recovery has been much faster than with my previous spinal surgery and I was back at work 3 weeks later. 7 weeks post surgery and I am completely pain free which after 17 years of chronic pain is quite some achievement. Words can never express my gratitude to and my admiration for Mr Derham and I cannot recommend him highly enough.
