Following discovery of a tumour at the junction between the brain stem and the spinal cord, Mr White carried out brain decompression surgery and a biopsy in November 2020. Before the operation Mr White was courteous and patient, taking considerable time to find out about my symptoms and answer all my questions thoroughly. After then operation Mr White demonstrated his concern and commitment by coming into the hospital to see me on several occasions even though he was meant to be on annual leave. During that time it also became apparent that members of his team, from registrars to nurses, have a great deal of respect for him. I think I was very fortunate that Mr White was in charge of my surgery.

I was diagnosed with a spinal tumour ependymoma back in January 2020 after 6 months of agonising pain in my right foot, I was put straight onto Mr Barrie White at QMC Nottingham by Derby Royal hospital. The shock of having a tumour inside my spinal cord was such a shock. But after meeting with such a kind, caring consultant he eased my concern almost straight away I waited approx 6 weeks for the operation and although it went ahead it was just a few days before the COVID 19 lockdown, I can’t lie it was very hard. In hospital for 9 days with no visitors ,not even my husband could visit me but the nurses on the ward did a great job. Mr White visited me almost every day to check up on me. One particular day I was snoozing on my bed and woke up to see him just sitting at the side of my bed waiting for me to wake. Mr white is so genuine, he doesn’t treat you like a number he treats you as a friend. It has now been 9 months since my operation and things are getting better slowly but surely, the numbness in my legs and feet are improving and after my latest mri scan I’ve been told things are settling down nicely. I do wish so much that I could give that man a hug and say how thankful I am for expertise in dealing with my situation but unfortunately due to COVID I have not been able to attend any appointments

I was diagnosed with a tumour on my spinal cord in November 2019. I’m about to come up to 1 year post op and really felt the need to share my experience. I was transferred from Derby hospital to Queens to meet Mr White for emergency surgery. I was terrified as I knew I didn’t have long before I would be paralysed. I didn’t even have 24 hours to process what was about to happen to me and the risks involved but he kept me at ease and told me this is what he had been doing for a long time. To have an expert take care of you is reassuring. Barrie is a wonderful surgeon; he kept me informed, fully removed my tumour and saw me every day until I left the hospital. I am so thankful I had him to take care of me. Thank you for all your hard work, I certainly will never forget the care I received and I’m thankful that I have made a full recovery.

I was told I had chiari malformation at the start of this year and was referred to Mr White. Stright from the off I knew I was in the best hands. Mr White, Mr Hammett and the whole team were absolutely amazing in every way possible. My surgery was to remove my C1 lamina and widen my foremen magnum, a really complex procedure with a high number of risks. The team kept me calm and was stright to the point with everything. When I woke up in recovery I knew instantly my symptoms were completely gone. I owe the team everything for what they have done for me and ill never be able to repay them for what they did, but you gave mey life back and I cannot thank you enough. You are truly amazing Mr White, thanks again.

I have been under Mr White since 2012 being treated for spinal stenosis. He has operated on my spine on two occasions on different areas of my spine. On the first occasion the stenosis was in my neck I had completely lost my sense of balance and felt like I could have tripped over my own shadow. Mr White explained that the stenosis was severe and I could have been paralyzed The operation was successful and I regained my balance and felt much better. He continues to treat my spinal issues and treats me with kindness and compassion He always gives you time to explain your concerns and equally explains his diagnosis in simple terms I cannot praise Mr White enough and would highly recommend him. Thank you Mr White for everything you have done and continue to do for me. Christina Selby
