Mr Andrew Cockbain

Mr Cockbain is a Consultant Upper Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Surgeon. He specialises in minimally invasive surgery for weight loss (bariatrics), gallstones, hiatus hernias, acid reflux, groin hernias and cancer. He leads the Robotic UGI surgery service at St James’s Hospital, offering robotic surgery for weight loss, acid-reflux, and cancers of the stomach and oesophagus. Mr Cockbain believes in delivering high-quality, patient-centred care. He has a particular interest in improving care systems to provide better patient-experiences and outcomes. His work on this has been recognised by the NHS Leadership Academy. He represents Yorkshire as regional council member at the Association of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery (AUGIS). Mr Cockbain has a strong research interest. He is the National Cancer Research Network Subspecialty Lead for UGI Surgery in Yorkshire and Humber and is actively involved in delivering several large UK trials. These include new surgical techniques and treatments to improve patient outcomes, and novel methods to monitor patients after surgery to improve quality of life. He has published over 50 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters and presented his work nationally and internationally.
