Written by a patient at Manchester Royal Infirmary
15th March 2016

In brief I will explain the situation I was in before I met Mr Ali Sheen, a most caring and compassionate man and surgeon. In April 2014 following surgery at a local Chester hospital (COCH) to remove a diseased pelvic kidney, I was left with a huge incisional hernia that was extremely uncomfortable and debilitating. As such I was referred to a Senior Surgical Consultant at the COCH, who after 18 months of investigation that including CT scans, examinations etc, he made a final stance and commented " It's definitely not a hernia, the muscle wall surrounding the abdomen has weakened following the incision thus it is now not strong enough to prevent the bowel from protruding." He then went on to say the type of surgery I required was not within his expertise/remit thus he was discharging me from his care and the care of the COCH. Thankfully I had done my own research before this appointment thus I stood firm and asked the consultant to refer me to Mr Sheen at Manchester Royal Infirmary. , which thankfully he did. In the interim period I contacted Mr Sheen by E mail and presented him with a synopsis of what had happened in the past. Amazingly Mr Sheen replied to me personally and arranged for an appointment to see him within a two to three week period. The consultation that followed with Mr Sheen and his Senior Registrar was so relaxed as compared to the meeting with the COCH consultant. Mr Sheen listened to what I had to say without interruption and explained the procedure I was to have in finite detail e.g. intricate surgery utilising mesh, screws, glue and muscle tightening. On 9th February 2016, Mr Sheen and his fantastic team performed the hernia repair at the MRI and what a fantastic job they did. To conclude I cant thank Mr Sheen and his team enough for what they did and how they have reinvigorated my life. A true gent. God bless Mr P Rickett Wirral

I had a substantial umbilical hernia and had been waiting for NHS surgery for 2 years. Mr Sheen performed a hernia repair and abdominoplasty in January 2016 and I have been very pleased with the outcome. I have recovered well with little discomfort or pain and the large incision healed quickly and the scar is fading well. I am a much better shape and am increasing my exercise levels. I was very pleased with the care and attention given by Mr Sheen and felt very confident about his skill and expertise. This has been a very beneficial and positive experience.

Mr Sheen was very open and clear when explaining the procedure (double open inguinal hernia). The operation went very smoothly with no complications and post-operative recovery was very quick. A very useful brochure was provided detailing the recovery timescale. Throughout the whole process, Mr Sheen's sympathetic approach to the welfare and peace of mind of the patient has been exemplary.

Could not have wished for a better experience. Mr Sheen removed my gallbladder laproscopically. Even though there were some complications it all went very smoothly. I was able to go home the same day and was able to drive within a few days. Three months on and I am completely well - no after effects (apart from no pain!). Mr Sheen provides a very useful information leaflet which was easy to read and relevant. All the consultations were very clear and friendly. Great bedside manner. His anesthetist was also very good. All in all I am delighted with my care and grateful to be well again. Thanks!

Dr Sheen is the best. On the 22nd December 2015 I visited him with a pain in the stomach. I had already been to a local hospital to be told everything looked ok with my stomach and there was nothing to worry about. After visiting Dr Sheen, within a couple of hours I was admitted in to hospital at the Alexandra to have my appendix removed the very next day. After the operation Dr pointed out that the appendix was in a bad way and his prompt actions were vital. The professionalism and speed of which Doctor Aali Sheen acted was impressive. His team of professionals (including Dr Jamdar who carried out the operation) who looked after me were first class. I would have no hesitation in recommending Dr Sheen and am sincerely grateful to him and his team for taking swift action that enabled me to be home safe and well for Christmas in 2015. Professional health care does not come any better I can assure you. Many thanks Dr Sheen. Sincerely grateful. Philip Hitchen.
