Dr Duncan delivered the life changing diagnosis of young onset Parkinson’s Disease to me with as much compassion as if he was telling me I had a cold. He asked me if I had any questions but by the time I had managed to collect my thoughts he had already moved on and was saying he’d see me again in a year. Within 15 minutes I was on my way home, upset, bewildered and lacking any information whatsoever. Two or three further appointments were no better. The little advice I was given on medication was, I later learned, out of date. In hindsight, with the correct information and support I feel I would have been able to continue working for another couple of years. I eventually requested a different Consultant, whose excellent care further highlighted how poor my previous experience had been.

I got referred to Dr Duncan 6 months after a vaccine. I had been bedbound for about 7 weeks in total, had severe and disabling nausea, dizziness, numbness, headaches, micrographia, sensory sensitivity, thirst, appetite changes, cognitive dysfunction, slowness, weakness, intense fatigue, "jelly legs", walking gait changes, the list goes on. He rejected my referral because "dizziness and nausea are expected after a vaccine". From other patients ive spoken to, it sounds like a lucky miss to have avoided him but why he felt such disabling symptoms for half a year are "expected" after a vaccine will forever remain a mystery to me. What kind of neurologist dismisses such symptoms? If he had taken the time to see me and examine me properly, he would have found subacute combined degeneration of the cord, blood clots, mast cell activation syndrome, postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, dysautonomia, endocrine dysfunction, and possible small fibre neuropathy.

I have attended Dr Callum Duncan as both an Outpatient and a day patient at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, managed by NHS Grampian for a number of years. Dr Duncan is knowledgable, patient centred and holistic. He listens to you carefully, communicates well and is always responds promptly. He offers patients respect and dignity and is clearly much respected by other members of the Neuroscience Team. It is rare to find a NHS Consultant with such a demanding career who always makes you feel he has all the time you need from him. I know many people with my neuro condition across the UK who receive a much poorer service and I am grateful for what I receive. I also appreciate his ability to support my family and to communicate well with the other professionals who are involved in my care. I would strongly recommend him to any patient whose life is affected by neurological illness.

I have been very satisfied with the level of care I have so far received. I am confident that Dr Duncan will do his best to provide a diagnosis and obtain the best treatment for me.
