Greater empathy by receptionist. Thursday 20th August 7.30pm I listened while the dark haired mid 30’s receptionist barked at a young girl with burnt hand to “book yourself in on a pad”...the fact that the girl was holding a jug of water in one hand, her other burnt hand in the Jug seemed of no importance to receptionist who could barely be bothered to make eye contact with her. This attitude continued throughout the time I was there. The other older receptionist was more helpful, helping an older lady having trouble using the iPads, that at least was comforting to see. These people are a first point of contact, it’s no wonder people complain about A and E. but the nursing care we were given was exceptional and cannot be faulted, it’s a shame this lady’s attitude was lacking any empathy or traits associated with our great NHS. It seems trivial, I know but someone with mental health issues could really have been affected by her attitude, which felt like you were bothering her.

Where to begin? My stepdad was taken in and out of Worthing Hospital for several months at the start of 2020. On the fourth occasion, he collapsed at his home. The ambulance turned up to the property and the medic was shocked that he has not been put on any antibiotics since coming back from the hospital. For the duration of this, he was 'diagnosed' with several conditions (by Worthing Hospital), including prostate cancer which was indeed False! After spending a month in Worthing hospital, he was transferred to Brighton Hospital on Friday evening, the 26th of June 2020. He passed away from a HEART ATTACK/HEART FAILURE on Sunday, the 28th June 2020! Why? The entire time my stepdad had SEPSIS which turned into infection of his heart valve and the heart has finally given up! The ignorance of the hospital has cost my stepdad his LIFE! WE FEEL DEVASTATION AND ANGER TO SAY THE LEAST!

Review of AE (Worthing) written by a patient

I was found unconscious in the street by police officers. I am writing this after 4 hours and have not been seen. This is a day after being told to wait for 2 hours for an emergency ambulance to attend, for which it took 14 hours and arrived whilst I was at work. NHS is useless, definitely doesn't deserve any extra funding when all the staff are crap at their jobs. 4 hour and counting wait after being found unconscious in the street is an absolute joke.

Excellent service from all staff. I was amazed at how excellent their care and service was. I have just moved to Worthing from Kent.

For the past ten days, we have been visiting a dear friend who was receiving end of life care on Becket ward. We wanted to pay tribute to the dedicated and skilled medical, nursing and support staff who looked after George in his final days. Without exception they were caring, patient and kind. They did everything possible to ensure his dignity and comfort. We saw the NHS at its best and we are so thankful that we have this wonderful hospital in our town.

The consultants/nurses were incredibly friendly, supportive and informative. Most of all kind and empathetic, which goes a long way when you're nervous of having an operation.

Review of Downlands written by a patient
11th January 2020

I was in for a stomach drain which I’ve not had previously. From arriving in radiology the process was smooth, no waiting time, helpful staff (especially Kim) and once the procedure had been completed by my consultant, I was transferred by bed up to Downlands for the day for the drain to work. Very friendly, helpful but most of all compassionate and had time to talk to me and explain what was happening (particularly Amanda who was amazing). I may have to have this procedure repeated and I will be much less nervous now I have met the team and have seen how great they all are. Highly recommend this team of exemplary professionals.
