Review of Ward A5 written by a patient
13th July 2017

I am a retired nurse of some 45 years service with a vast experience through a number of nursing disciplines. Whilst I have to accept that nursing, and hospital standards in general, have been compromised by financial constraints and will never be what they were, the basics of nursing / patient care should never be allowed to be compromised. Unfortunately my stay on A5 has convinced me that in general it has. My experience on this ward highlighted to me a clear dichotomy between the the care given by the day staff and what can only be described as a serious lack of care demonstrated by those staff during the night. Accepting that with current staffing levels staff are under some considerable pressure the care shown by the day staff was in general acceptable with some individual demonstrations of 'genuine nursing care'. During the night I failed to get to sleep at all due to being in post op discomfort and added to which I was subjected to fully switched on fluorescent lighting and a very loud audible alarm all night long. Post op care throughout the night was poor with a clear lack of empathy and motivation demonstrated by the night nursing staff who just walked past the bay not even bothering to look in or check on patients. In contrast once the day staff came back on duty the care changed completely. The staff nurse who planned my discharge was excellent with great motivation and traditional nursing values.

Review of Ward A9 written by a patient
9th July 2017

Great staff and very clean, I was "lost" in the system and ended up sat in a corridor with my notes on my knee outside the ward for 2 hours! but the nurse whom came to tell me to get ready for surgery shut the curtains with herself inside then barked at me "right! take them off" pointing at my trousers and stood with her hands on her hips, stripping me of all dignity barking orders at me as though I was a naughty child with all the care of a Nazi guard in a gas chamber, insisting I couldn't put on the surgical stockings due to my hand injury until i demanded she left me to place them on myself, when she re-entered she then sighed, huffed and puffed whilst re-organising them in a scalding fashion... Everything and everyone else was perfect from staff to cleanliness (bar an exceptionally dry and tasteless sandwich i received after 18 hours of starvation, but that's not a surprise as it was 7pm)

Had to wait 8 hours after being told that I could go home for doctor to do medicines, so could not be discharged, which I think is a ridiculous amount of time, knowing that they knew I was going home that day. Could they not have been done at doctors rounds in the morning.

Review of Ophthalmic Day Surgery Warrington written by a patient

The two nurses on duty today were excellent and a credit to their profession and to your hospital. They were very busy but showed patience and care and commitment to the patients throughout the afternoon. Jeremy Hunt should spend time with them to show him just how wonderful your NHS staff are and how much they deserve a large pay rise.

Review of Ante Natal Clinic written by a patient
27th June 2017

Everyone is reasonably friendly and helpful. However, i have now come for many appointmenta and the quality of the interaction is very variable. Eg when a woman cones for the first time, first pregnancy, she is just expected to know where to go, what to do with her notes etc yet none of this is explained well at all. It makes the initial appointments very scary and unsettling. From ultrasound through to the consultants, it would be worth bearing in mind that we are ppl and not sacks of flesh to be proded and poked. Especially the students in ultrasound dont understand this and forget we are people like them having lots of umcomfortable stuff done to us. A bit more empathy and understanding would be good.
