Review of A&E St Peters written by a patient
26th November 2020

All of the nurses and doctors were really excellent! Despite me not being the easiest patient (I hate needles and blood and hospitals generally) they all showed great empathy and made me feel comfortable even though I was very worried and in a lot of pain. Their patient skills could not have been better. I specifically wanted to mention a younger doctor who’s first name was Samuel who was very friendly when assessing me and checking on my condition and another registrar who quickly got me transferred to Royal Surrey.

Review of A&E St Peters written by a patient

I attended A&E with a potential early miscarriage and feeling unwell. I had already spoken to my GP the day before and told to seek help if my symptoms changed. I was working at St. Peter’s and felt dizzy like I might faint, unwell and not myself. The triage nurse in UTC was phenomenal. She treated me with kindness and understanding, shut the door when I went in to give me privacy. I was sent to main A&E, the receptionist was quick and efficient at getting me seated. Having been to A&E before I feel this was different and she could see my distress. I also wanted to mention how fantastic the nurse practitioner was who briefly saw me. He saw I was upset and just confirmed with me my reason for being there, rather than me having to repeat for another time. )He also popped in to see me when he was in CDU later on to see how I was doing) I was then taken through to the CDU to await the gynae team. Of note, on arrival my blood pressure was 186/106 and heart rate 125 but this wasn’t rechecked again for a few hours until the gynae SHO saw me and asked for it again. At this point it was 204/111. There were moments during my care that weren’t great, the lack of observations, and sometimes the lack of privacy. At one point discussing what was clearly a sensitive situation, I had to share my one person bay with another patient. I appreciate that the department was busy but I don’t feel this is acceptable, especially considering how vulnerable I was feeling. The exam “room” in CDU too is so exposed, especially to have an internal exam. I felt anxious that someone would come in. One thing I would really like to feed back on, is the phenomenal care by the gynae SHO Dr Pari Sangi (apologies if not correct). She firstly apologised for the time it had taken to get to me, which I said there was no need for I work there I understand how busy it gets. She treated me with nothing but compassion and respect. It was clear how busy she must have been, but she took time to talk with me, keep me fully involved in my care and explain everything that was happening. It was a horrible time being in hospital, especially being a member of staff - and having rubbish veins in had 10+ attempts at bloods and cannulation. But I will never forget the incredible care that she gave me and the way she comforted me in a time of extreme vulnerability. And I will be forever grateful to that

I was referred by my GP to st Peter's for emergency surgery. They understood my concern very well and prioritised my surgery accordingly. They are doing so many surgery on the day. They understood the priority and done my surgery.

Suggested improvements
First day they discharged and come straight to surgery next day morning. I wrongly came to a&e entrance but the front dest asked me to use main entrance. It was upsetting since I could nt walk at all.

Very efficient with good measures in place for covid security. I would have expected more ventilation though.

For Covid purposes, more ventilation

It took hours to be seen by a nurse after I had been told by my GP that it was an emergency and I needed to be seen now. The medical condition that I had symptoms for is time sensitive and they knew this. When I eventually saw the first Dr he was very helpful and informative and told me I would need an emergency MRI as he believed I had this condition. I then waited 2 hours to be told by a different Dr (a female dr he had swapped with) that they cant get me in for an MRI so to come back tomorrow, and that they would not have me as an inpatient as they 'didn't have room' and also that I 'was fine as I can still walk' (it was a spinal issue that I had), I told my GP this and she was disgusted and told me that I should have been admitted in case it was said condition. I feel let down by St Peters yet again. I will never be coming to this hospital for any kind of treatment and will be travelling further out to receive any urgent care in the future as majority of the doctors and nurses at St Peter's are rude, ill-informed, uneducated and regularly medically neglect patients.

Suggested improvements
Treat patients in a timely manner when they have an actual emergency. Keep patients informed about what is happening. Don't turn patients away and reject urgent care because 'our wards are full', listen to patients concerns...we're not all hypochondriac's.

My son is profoundly autistic first when we arrived the woman letting people in refused to engage with us the gentleman refused to let us in the building and queried why my son who is 11 wouldn’t wear a mask he cannot tolerate wearing a mask. I asked to speak to the LD liaison nurse I was ignored and blanked!. I understand due to covid things are different but when I asked if I could return to the car to pick up a coat and told no as I would loose my place in the Que my child was incredibly cold at this point. I was then queried why I was wearing my own mask and told I couldn’t enter with one then made to feel stupid for requesting one of your mask even after it was offered by the person on the door. I have been a patient of St. Peter’s die the last 35 years but I will never bring my children into your a&e again I’ll take them to frimley from now on after this experience your triage nurse was lovely but that’s about as good as it got this visit

Suggested improvements
