Review of Harrogate Stoma Department
24th August 2023

I have received first class treatment from Gill and Louise and I now class them as friends. They are fantastic sources of information about Stoma and how to manage the condition. I was given a fantastic briefing by Gill before surgery and Louise was brilliant with me when I was recovering on the ward. I have had several issues since I came out of hospital and they have always helped me out. Nothing has been too much trouble and they have endless patience. I cannot praise them enough.

You have a wonderful team at Harrogate and I honestly can't think of how you could improve it.

Review of Harrogate Stoma Department

Over the past few years I have had difficulties to overcome ie stage4 bowel cancer, chemo, and catheterising all the time. However none of these were as traumatic as waking up having to manage a stoma. After a few sleepless nights I met Harrogate nurses Louise and Gill who immediately wiped away all fears and worries.I now realise that managing a stoma is not a simple operation;it is quite complicated and requires careful management.particularly over the first number of weeks.Expert guidance is a necessity. I am most grateful for the help and kindness I am now receiving from the Harrogate nurses;it is comforting to know that they are there should things go wrong.

I was really surprised to learn that the hospital (which has such an excellent reputation) has no stoma department. In fact I was shocked that my first appointment was held in the toilet as there was no room.So better facilities for the complicated treatment would be wonderful.

Louise was so knowledgeable and patient. She helped me to build my confidence and encouraged me to be as independent as possible. Lots of information was provided to read as I felt able to do so.

Suggested improvements
I was very happy with the provision - nothing more to add.

As ever Gill and Lucy treated me with respect, care and empathy and looked for solutions and alternatives for dealing with the discharge from my fistula. A real credit to the hospital.

Suggested improvements
It was unusual and seemed quite inappropriate to be trawling the corridors to find a clinical room suitable for the examination and consultation. Surely there should be a dedicated facility for this purpose.
