I feel I had great care for my total knee replacement and nothing was too much trouble.
I would recommend this hospital. I felt confident with the care & staff. (& the food was very good )
What a great hospital was treated the same as a private patient the nurses the lady that did the food on the ward were excellent . Now going back for aftercare the physiotherapists are great I actually enjoy going back . If I can go back to use the cafe they have and a chat I will
All good
The hospital was very clean and the staff were very caring and kind, but I do think that the department was under staffed nursing wise , which affected their ability to carry out the steps towards my discharge in a timely manner.
I arrived back in my room, after the Op at approx 10am and was told by one of the nurses that I should be discharged at about midday - I did have some food around this time. Midday came and went. I had a visit from the physio therapist.
It got to about 2pm and no discharge papers had appeared. I questioned the nurse when I would be discharged and and she said she would go and check with the doctors. I think this nurse was having to oversee the work of a junior nurse as I heard her complaining to the sister about having to do this.
Another hour went by - I saw the nurse in the corridor when I was practicing using crutches and asked her again. She said she had been called into a meeting and would be back in 20mins. An hour later there was no sign of her, so I grabbed a docter and walked down to the ward reception with her where she got a senior doctor to sign my discharge papers.
I was finally discharged at approx. 4:15pm.
It is obvious that the ward was understaffed. This situation is not one I would expect in a private hospital - it was more akin to the NHS
On the whole I had a positive experience at the Nuffield but of course nowhere is perfect and I felt certain elements of care were lacking. On multiple occasions items I needed were put out my reach and I really didn’t want to keep ringing the bell which I was told was for emergencies only. Several times my crutches were put out of reach which rendered me immobile. The day of my surgery my meal was put out of reach and my bedside cabinet had been moved so I had no access to my phone, tissues etc. The night of my surgery I requested help to get to the toilet. The nurse said he would wait outside and I should just call him but he left for ten minutes and I struggled to get off the loo and back to bed, almost falling. Everything else was for the most part satisfactory.
The pre and post care was excellent and the aftercare Physio Owen was great and gave me confidence to quicken my physical recovery.
I stayed at the Nuffield Brighton for 2 nights following a hip replacement. Everyone I met and interacted with as part of my pre-op assessment and during my stay could not have been kinder or more professional. I was anxious about the procedure but everyone put me at ease and the level of nursing care was excellent.
Overall an excellent provision of care. It has been 40 years since my last significant surgery and stay in hospital. I was reassured and found the whole experience to be a worthwhile and enjoyable one
